Tablet PC System Sizing Metrics for High DPI

Overview of Tablet PC system sizing metrics for high dots per inch (dpi).

In the Tablet PC, the minimum size of a hot spot, as well as the space between hot spots, is 3.0 millimeters. This requirement ensures that users can use natural and efficient pen movements to tap hot spots with satisfactory error rates and movement times.

The way in which users view their screen can also be a problem. Even typical indoor office lighting produces considerable glare and color washout of the LCD. Larger hot spots and obvious feedback to users are essential.

Sizing designations use physical measurements (such as millimeters) rather than pixel measurements. Pixel measurements are subject to LCD dpi because each pixel comprises three dots. The high-dpi LCD that Tablet PC uses renders a control that is significantly smaller than it appears on a typical laptop or desktop LCD.

All dimensions in the following examples are in pixels, where the resolution equals 122 dpi (at 1024x768 screen resolution), resulting in hot spots that average more than 3.0 millimeters.
