Log and view modem commands

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To log and view modem commands

  1. Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.

  2. On the Modems tab, click the modem whose commands you want to log.

  3. Click Properties, then click the Diagnostics tab.

  4. In Logging, select the Append to Log check box if you are working on a computer running Windows XP or Record a Log check box if you are working on a computer running a member of the Windows Server 2003 family.

Notes

  • To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.

  • To open a Control Panel item, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.

  • Click View Log to display the log file. This file identifies the modem and displays information about how it is functioning.

  • Commands sent to the modem are captured in the file:

    systemroot\System32\ModemLog_Model.txt.

The path is usually C:\Windows\System32\. Model is the name of the modem as it appears in the list of installed modems on the Modems tab of Phone and Modem Options.

  • In Windows XP, logging is always turned on, and the log is overwritten at the beginning of every session unless you select the Append to Log check box. In the Windows Server 2003 family, logging is turned off unless you select the Record a Log check box.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
