How to Add a Category to a Catalog

This topic describes how to add a category to a catalog.

Note

Category names must be unique across all catalogs.

To start the New Category Wizard

  1. Click Start, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2009 , and then click Catalog Manager.

  2. In the Catalog Manager, in the Views pane, click Catalogs.

  3. In the Catalogs pane, select the catalog to which you want to add a category.

  4. In the Task pane, click Create a New Category.

  5. On the Welcome to the New Category Wizard page, click Next.

To select the category definition

  1. On the Definition Type Selection page, do the following:

    Definition

    Select the category definition you want to use for this category. A category definition specifies the properties that are available in a particular type of category.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the category properties

  1. On the Category Properties page, do the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    Name

    Type the name for the new category.

    Definition name

    Displays the category definition for the category.

    You cannot edit this box.

    Display Name

    Type the display name for the new category.

    List Price

    Type the list price for the new category.

    We recommend that you enter a price for the category if you want to use this category as a pricing category.

    Is Searchable

    Select this check box if you want this category to be included in a specification search.

    Description

    Type a description for the new category.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the values for the category custom properties

  1. On the Category Custom Properties page, do the following:

    Type the corresponding values for the custom properties.

    The custom properties are:

    • Image_height

    • Image_width

    • Image_filename

    • Brand

  2. Click Next.

To create category associations

  1. On the Category Associations page, do the following:

    Primary Category

    Select the primary category from the drop-down list.

    Each category can have one primary parent category. The primary parent category provides a canonical path of a child category or product.

    If a product is in more than one category, and pricing is set at the category level, the price of the primary parent category overrides the price in all other categories that are using category pricing.

    Parent Categories

    Select to specify a parent category association.

    Child Categories

    Select to specify a child category association.

  2. Click Add to open the Product Picker dialog box to select a category(s) for the association.

  3. In the Product Picker dialog box, search for the category(s) you want for the association.

  4. In the Search Results pane, select the category(s), and then click OK.

  5. On the Category Associations page, click Next.

To create product associations

  1. On the Product Associations page, click Add to open the Product Picker dialog box to select the product(s) for the association.

  2. In the Product Picker dialog box, search for the product(s) you want for the association.

  3. In the Search Results pane, select the product(s), and then click OK.

  4. On the Product Associations page, click Next.

To create a category relationship

  1. On the Category Relationships page, click Add to open the Product Picker dialog box to select the product, category, or both for which you want to create the relationship.

  2. In the Product Picker dialog box, search for the product, category, or both that you want for the relationship.

  3. In the Search Results pane, select the product, category, or both that you want for the relationship, and then click OK.

  4. On the Category Relationships page, in the Relationship box, type the name of the relationship with the category.

    You can create product-to-product relationships, product-to-category relationships, category-to-category relationships, and category-to-product relationships. For example, in a product-to-product relationship, if your customer buys a movie, you may want to offer your customer the soundtrack to the movie. This is an explicit relationship.

  5. Click Next.

To confirm the category properties and complete the New Category Wizard

  1. On the Category Summary page, review the category property values. To change one or more of the category property values, click Back. To create the new category, click Create.

  2. On the Completing the New Category Wizard page, click Finish.
