When you scale your Data Protection Manager (DPM) solution to multiple DPM servers, you can monitor and manage your DPM servers from a centralized location. To do this, use System Center Operations Manager and the DPM Central Console.
In this article, we describe how to install the Operations Manager agent and the Central Console. Before we go into more detail about the Central Console, you may want to check out Manage multiple DPM servers with Central Console and Monitor DPM with Operations Manager.
You can install the Central Console on a System Center 2012 Operations Manager server that’s running any of the following operating systems:
Windows Server 2012 R2
Windows Server 2012
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Windows 8.1
Windows 8
Windows 7
Note: The Central Console can’t be installed on a DPM server
To deploy the Central Console, follows these steps:
Install the Operations Manager agent—install the Operations Manager agent on each DPM server that you want to manage and monitor.
Install the Central Consoleinstall the Central Console on the Operations Manager server.
Install the Operations Manager agent
To install the agent, follow these steps:
Install the agent on the DPM servers you want to monitor. For more information see Operations Manager Agent installation methods.
After you install the Operations Manager agent, set the following registry key - [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Operations Manager\3.0\Modules\Global\PowerShell] "ScriptLimit"=dword:0000000f. After you modify this setting, restart the Health Service (System Center Management).
Install the Central Console
You install the Central Console by importing the DPM management packs on the Operations Manager server and by then installing the Central Console:
Import the DPM management pack as follows:
On the Operations Manager server, remove any existing System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) management packs.
Import System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) management packs. The Central Console consists of two management packs - Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataProtectionManager.2012.Discovery.mp and Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataProtectionManager.2012.Library.mp. Import both of these management packs. They are on the DPM media at <CD_drive:>\Management Packs.
Note: When you import a management pack, Windows displays a warning about write actions. This is an expected warning, and you can click OK to continue.
After you import the pack, install the Central Console as follows:
On the Setup screen in Operations Manager, select Install Central Console Server and Client side Components if you want to monitor the DPM servers on which the Operations Manager agent is installed and to use the scoped DPM Administrator console.
Select Install Central Console if you want to use the scoped DPM Administrator console only, without server monitoring.
Select Install Central Console Server side Components if you want to monitor servers only, without using the scoped DPM Administrator console.
Note:
DPM adds firewall exceptions for port 6075 to enable the scoped Administrator console. Open ports for SQL Server.exe and SQL browser.exe.
