What Training do you want and where?

David MeegoOver the years I have had many requests for training on the various tools available for customising or developing with Microsoft Dynamics GP.

Training for Microsoft Dynamics GP tools does exist, but it is only run infrequently, in a classroom environment.  When it is scheduled, it is often canceled due to lack of numbers.

I find this frustrating as I know that many new developers would benefit from the training, but it seems very difficult to identify what training is needed in a specific location.

What I have also found is that the demand in one country is often not enough to justify a class being run, but there is quite often enough demand if you combine a number of countries in the same region.

Another issue I have seen is that the developers themselves want or need the training, but management is unwilling to invest the time and funds to pay for people to attend training.  You can see my recent post on that subject, October is the month to attend Developer Training.

What I would like to do with this post is get an understanding of what the demand for training is:  What courses are wanted? When are they wanted? Where are they wanted? How many attendees? and most importantly is management committed in principle to invest in their staff?

If I can demonstrate enough demand for any particular training course in a region, I will be able to open discussions with the training organisers in that region and look to getting the course run.

The courses that are available are:

  • Dex1: Dexterity 1 (previously known as Dexterity Fundamentals) - 5 days

  • Dex2: Dexterity 2 (previously known as Dexterity Advanced Integration Techniques) - 5 days

  • RW: Report Writer - 2 days

  • Mod: Modifier with Visual Basic for Applications - 3 days

  • DT: Developer Toolkit (Web Services, eConnect, Visual Studio Tools) - 3 days

The training materials for all the classes (except the Dexterity 2 course) can be downloaded from the web.  The links are available on the Articles & Links pages for Dexterity, Modifier, Report Writer and Developer Toolkit

Please email MBS Profesional Services (mbsprofessionalservices@microsoft.com) using the template below to let us know what training you are interested in.

    David, Couple of queries:

  1. Is it mandatory to attend this training under the banner of an Organization?
  2. Is there any online training possibilities? Sort of Web Conferencing? In case the trainings are not available on our region, at least this would ensure we attend the training. I would try and get you the other details you had asked for, in a day. Thanks Vaidy

Hi Vaidy At this stage there is nothing planned so I cannot say anything is mandatory. Usually, the training is fairly flexible and should allow for Partners, Customers and individual consultants.   The materials for all the courses (except Dexterity 2) are already available for download for self study. I am not sure how well this would work as Web conferencing as the trainer needs to see your screens to know where you are at.  If you are going to have a live trainer, the classroom environment does work best. The issue is that most of the course are hands on exercises and each exercise builds on the previous exercises.  It is important to be sure all students have completed the current project before you can move onto the next. Working over the web in a one to many situation would make it difficult to ensure that no student is left behind. David

Northwest Arkansas, USA. I'll take advantage of any training on Dynamics GP development I can get. I've been able to make it on VS, VBA, IM, RW, Smartlist, etc from the information I've got off Customer Source, Websites like these, meeting others at Convergence, etc. I haven't had the time to dedicate to the huge Dexterity Manual... but feel a better understanding of Dexterity would improve my GP development.

First, a thank you to everyone that has posted so far in regards to their need for training. In some of the comments, I am notice some immediate demands that partners or customers have. While David was initial looking to gather data on immediate needs, we want to make sure and help direct folks on an ongoing basis for their training need. My ask is to have you email mbsprofessionalservices@microsoft.com if you have an immediate need for personalized training. This team will take your request and see if they can find a resource available to offer some sort of training, whether it be classroom, onsite, web based, etc. So, please send your requests to this email and we can work with you to determine how we can help.
