Overview of healthcare data foundations in healthcare data solutions
The healthcare data foundations capability enhances Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) data processing within the data lake environment and efficiently structures data for analytics and AI/machine learning modeling. These data pipelines flatten or transform the ingested FHIR JSON data into a tabular structure. The data is then stored in the delta parquet format, optimizing it for analytical tooling and storage efficiency.
After transformation, you can use traditional SQL tools to query the tabular data. You can enable exploratory analysis on various aspects of healthcare data, such as clinical, financial (claims and extended of benefits), and administrative data modules. Utilizing these pipelines for healthcare data streamlines the transformation process, ultimately enhancing analytical capabilities for informed decision-making in healthcare scenarios.
The capability also enables the following functionalities:
Data exploration and visualization: With SQL endpoints, you can use T-SQL to query the tabular data, facilitating both ad-hoc and exploratory analysis. You can also use Power BI to visualize the data stored within OneLake. You can create dynamic dashboards, insightful reports, and visually appealing charts and graphs. This comprehensive suite of functionalities empowers users to explore and present data in a meaningful and actionable manner. It drives informed decision-making and enhances overall data-driven insights.
Data mining and machine learning: You can use tabular data to apply advanced data mining and machine learning techniques, enabling the discovery of valuable patterns, trends, associations, and predictive insights in your data. These powerful analytical methods help you gain a deeper understanding of your data and maximize its value.
Note
You need the healthcare data foundations capability to run other healthcare data solutions capabilities. Make sure you deploy this capability first before you try to deploy the other capabilities.

Conceptual architecture
Healthcare organizations face challenges in meeting the demand for real-time access to cloud-based data while ensuring secure sharing across teams. Healthcare data solutions in Microsoft Fabric help you address these challenges by standardizing how you manage data, and ensure consistency, accuracy, and reliability. You can unify, transform, and enrich data according to industry standards. You can also collaborate seamlessly with other teams and use advanced analytics to gain insights and build next-generation applications.
Healthcare data foundations and the clinical ingestion architecture establish a comprehensive clinical pipeline flow. Each component within this flow is orchestrated to interact with its designated lakehouse. When you deploy this capability, the respective notebooks and lakehouses are available in your Fabric workspace, showcasing their collaborative functionality. What isn't supported
- Deleting FHIR resources.
- Ingesting data from non-Microsoft FHIR services, such as Google Cloud Healthcare API or AWS HealthLake's managed FHIR API offerings.
