More detailed steps to fix .NET Framework install errors that ask for tmpXXXX.tmp

I previously described a set of steps in this blog post that can be used to manually remove the .NET Framework and reinstall it if you receive an error message stating that setup is unable to find the file tmpXXXX.tmp when attempting to install a .NET Framework service pack or hotfix. However, I've heard from a couple of customers over the past few weeks who still received errors related to tmpXXXX.tmp after performing the cleanup steps in that blog post. As a result, I posted a more complete set of steps that you can use to clean up your system and reinstall the .NET Framework.     It took me 2 days to find you Aaron but [whoopee] it was worth it!!  I downloaded your nifty brilliant tool and within 5 minutes my problems had gone away.  I was able to get back to business - and... you saved my sanity.  Thank you, thank you a million times for all your generosity and kind heartedness in helping lesser gifted computer users like me to get around these pesky glitches that drive us all to distraction!!

    Hi Puri Jo - I'm not sure I understand your question.  That error message sounds like it is coming from an application that is crashing, not from the .NET Framework.  You can try to narrow down which appliation is causing this crash by running msconfig.exe and choosing the Startup tab and looking at the programs that are listed there - those are the programs that are currently configured to start up each time you reboot your computer.

    this net frame work v1,1,4322 pops up when i try to click media center. and can't seem to get into media center can you help me? what do i do to get into media center

    Hi Mary - I am guessing you are using Windows XP Media Center Edition on your computer.  That version of Media Center requires that you have the .NET Framework 1.1 and 1.1 SP1 installed.  You can install those versions of the .NET Framework from the links at www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx and www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx.

    I keep getting an error msg. that tells me to stop NetFrameworkv1.1.4322 so that computer can enter standby mode. How do I do this? Thanks.

    Hi Penny - I haven't heard of this type of error before, so I'm not sure what to suggest.  Could you list the exact error message, or post a screenshot of the exact error message so that I can take a further look?

    my mircosoft.net framework3.5 service pack1 and net frame3.5 service pack1 and .net framework 3.5 family update for .net versions 2.0 through 3.5 (kb951847 )x86 will not download it keeps saying failed

    Hi Ray - Do these versions of the .NET Framework fail to download, or do they fail to install?  If they're failing to download, I'd suggest trying to download them manually instead of letting Windows Update try to download them for you.  If they fail to install, can you please use the tool described at blogs.msdn.com/.../6458047.aspx to gather all of your .NET Framework setup log files, post the file named %temp%vslogs.cab that this tool will create to a file server (such as http://skydrive.live.com) and then reply back here with a link I can use to download your log files and take a further look?

    Hi martin - I'd suggest using the steps and the cleanup tool described at blogs.msdn.com/.../8108332.aspx to fully remove the .NET Framework 1.1 from your computer, re-install it, then try again to install the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 and any additional security updates that are available for it.
