When I first start a word or excel, it is not responding and freeze for around 15 seconds. After that, all is good. As my desktop can't access to the internet, it it must be some background progress is trying to connect to the internet and wait for the time out. I have already turned off all the add-Ins.
This desktop is in our company's intranet and activated by volume license when it was first installed. Since then it is isolated from the internet.
If you start Word in application Safe mode, does that improve performance (temporarily, for the session running in Safe mode)?
It does work. Actually if I disable from the network, eg disable the NIC or pull out the cable, it is OK.

Peng He, the fact that disabling the network improves the situation could mean that Word and Excel are looking for some network resources on startup.

Is there any update on this topic? Microsoft Word is not responding and stops working after doing some pretty basic work on a file.
