Support Tip: App-V Client service fails to start and generates error 1053

~ Keshav Deo Jain

Hi everyone, Keshav here with another App-V support tip for you. After installing Hotfix Package 5 for Microsoft Application Virtualization 5.0 Service Pack 2 using the .MSP file (i.e. by running appv_client_kb2963211_x64.msp or appv_client_kb2963211_x86.msp) you may discover that the Microsoft App-V Client service fails to start and generates the following error:

Windows Could not start the Microsoft App-V Client service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

You may also find that you get the error below when running the command Import-Module Appv-Client:

Import-Module : Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.AppV.AppvClientComConsumer.dll' or one of its dependencies. The specified module could not be found.
At line:1 char:1
+ Import-Module AppvClient

undException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : FormatXmlUpdateException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Co
mmands.ImportModuleCommand

When initially troubleshooting this issue, I took a Dependency Walker trace of the Microsoft APP-V Client service and found multiple missing references for MSVCP120.DLL and MSVCR120.DLL:

These two files are installed by Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013.

RESOLUTION

If you run into this problem, the easiest fix is to install the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013 which can be found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=40784

Note that the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013 is a prerequisite for the App-V 5.0 client. The MSI installer will not detect missing prerequisites but the EXE installer will detect if it is necessary to install the prerequisites and do so accordingly. For the complete list of App-V 5.0 client prerequisites please see the following: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj713458.aspx.
