Configuring Web Management Service Logging and Tracing

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, Windows XP

There are three ways of logging Web Management Service (WMSvc) activity: Web Management Service W3C logging, Web Management Service Failed Request Tracing, and Web Management Service Tracing.

The following list provides a brief conceptual orientation.

  • Web Management Service W3C logging is not resource-intensive, but provides minimal logging information.

  • Web Management Service failed request tracing provides detailed information, but is resource-intensive and its output cannot be filtered.

  • Web Management Service Tracing provides detailed information that can be filtered, but is not resource-intensive like failed request tracing and therefore can be used in production environments.
