New features of remote access

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

New features of remote access

Routing and Remote Access provides the following new features:

  • Support for pre-shared keys in L2TP/IPSec authentication

You can configure a server running Routing and Remote Access to use a pre-shared key instead of a certificate for L2TP/IPSec VPN connections. For more information, see Pre-shared keys.

  • Integration of network address translation (NAT) and static and dynamic packet filtering

NAT interfaces can be configured to work with Basic Firewall, a simple dynamic packet filter, or with incoming or outgoing static packet filters. For more information, see Basic Firewall.

  • Support for L2TP/IPSec connections over NAT

Routing and Remote Access seamlessly translates L2TP/IPSec VPN connections over a NAT interface. For more information, see Virtual Private Networks.

  • Broadcast name resolution for small networks without a local WINS or DNS server

Small networks or branch offices without local WINS or DNS servers can resolve corporate resource network names. For more information, see Broadcast name resolution.
