Perform a network installation using RIS

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To perform a network installation using RIS

  1. After the Client Installation Wizard starts, press ENTER to continue the process.

  2. Enter the user name, password, and domain name into the appropriate fields, pressing TAB to move from one field to the next.

  3. Several options are available through the Client Installation Wizard; Automatic Setup is the default display option. The other three options are available only if you have changed the Default Domain Policy in Group Policy to allow them.

    • Automatic Setup

      This option predefines the computer name and a location in a container within Active Directory for the client computer accounts.

    • Custom Setup

      With this option selected, users can define a unique name for this computer and specify where the computer account will be created within Active Directory.

    • Restart Setup

      This option restarts an operating system installation attempt if it fails prior to completion.

    • Maintenance and Troubleshooting

      With this option selected, users can access tools from the Client Installation Wizard.

  4. Follow any additional instructions that appear on the screen.

  • The RIS administrator can control some of the choices and screens seen by users of RIS client computers. For more information about installation options available through RIS, see Related Topics.

Notes

  • A user who performs this procedure must first have a valid user name, password, and domain name. The user must also have appropriate permissions. For example, if the computer account has not been prestaged, the user must have permission to create the computer account within the appropriate domain or organizational unit. If the computer account has been prestaged, other permissions must be set. For more information, see Related Topics.

  • This topic does not apply to Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.

  • It is recommended that a user logging on to a RIS client computer type the user name, password, and domain name in the respective fields. Users should not combine user name and domain name with the @ symbol in between.

  • A network installation using RIS can be initiated by either the user of a Pre-Boot eXecution Environment (PXE) remote boot-enabled client computer or by a special remote boot disk provided for pre-Net PC/PC98 computers.

  • To invoke a network service boot (network installation using RIS) on client computers that are not remote-boot enabled, insert the boot disk into the disk drive and start the client computer. The client computer must have a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)-based network adapter from the list of specific adapters supported. To determine which network adapters RIS supports, use the boot disk–generating utility. For more information, see the topic about creating a remote boot disk in Related Topics.

  • The client computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) must be configured to use the network adapter as its primary boot device.

  • When running the Client Installation Wizard, use only standard ASCII characters (OEM characters 32-126) for user name, password, or domain name information. The Client Installation Wizard does not support extended ASCII character sets (such as those containing ü, é, and other extended characters).
