Windows HPC Server 2008 R2: Cluster Administration

Updated: February 2012

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

This section contains information to help a cluster administrator manage, monitor, and configure a Windows® HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster.

In this section

This section includes the following documents:

Title Description

Deploying Applications to Azure Nodes in Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

This topic describes the methods for deploying applications to Azure Nodes that are part of a Windows HPC Cluster.

Guidelines for Running HPC Applications on Windows Azure Nodes

This topic describes some general guidelines about moving data or files to the Azure nodes, using file share, and application licensing considerations.

Guidelines for Running MPI Applications in Windows Azure

This topic describes some general guidelines for running MPI jobs on Azure nodes, including firewall registration, netmasks, and types of MPI jobs best suited for Windows Azure.

Installing the Microsoft HPC Pack Web Components

This topic provides guidance on installing the Windows HPC Server Web Portal and a REST-based interface for submitting jobs.

Configure the Runtime Data Share

This topic provides guidance on configuring the location of the data share used by the HPC runtimes. You can configure the location of the share either before or after the installation of HPC Pack 2008 R2.

Enable HPC_CREATECONSOLE for GPGPU Jobs in Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

This topic describes how a cluster administrator can configure a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster to support automated console creation for jobs that run on graphics-processor units (GPUs).

SOA Service Configuration Files in Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

This topic describes the service registration, broker monitoring, and load balancing settings that you can configure in the service registration file.

Database Capacity Planning and Tuning for Microsoft HPC Pack

The information in this document is intended to help you determine the database configuration and additional tuning options that are appropriate for your cluster.

Understanding Node Metrics and Properties in HPC Cluster Manager

This topic describes the node properties and metrics that you can use to help monitor your nodes in HPC Cluster Manager.

Download and Install New Diagnostic Tests for Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

This topic provides information about new and custom diagnostic tests that are available for Windows HPC Server 2008 R2.

Back Up and Restore a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Cluster

This section includes guidelines for backing up the head node and the HPC databases. This section also describes the HPC Job Scheduler Service restore mode, and the additional steps that you must perform before and after restoring the databases to help to bring the cluster to a consistent state.

HPC Cluster Manager

This is the online, updated version of the installed help for HPC Cluster Manager. The topics in this documentation are intended to help cluster administrators configure and manage a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster.

Additional considerations

Making hardware changes to compute nodes. After you change the hardware configuration of a compute node, ensure that the configuration change is detected and updated in the job scheduling database by taking the node Offline (preferably before making the hardware change), and then bringing the node Online again. For more information, see Job Is Scheduled Using Stale Node Hardware Configuration Information.
