Step 3: Apply Software Updates to the Compute Nodes
Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008
After you update the node template, you are ready to apply the software updates. You do this by taking the nodes offline and then using the Maintain action on the nodes.
Note
If a node is in the Online state and is taken offline while running jobs, by default it first moves through the Draining state. In the Draining state, the node completes currently running jobs before going to the Offline state. However, you have the option to force the node offline and cancel any currently running jobs.
To take the compute nodes offline
In Node Management, in the Navigation Pane, under By Group, click ComputeNodes.
In the views pane, select one or more nodes.
Right-click your selection, and then click Take Offline. By default, the nodes enter the Draining state.
Wait until all of the nodes are in the Offline state before proceeding.
To run maintenance tasks on the compute nodes
In the Node Management, in the Navigation Pane, under By Group, click ComputeNodes.
In the views pane, select one or more nodes.
Right-click your selection, and then click Maintain. The nodes enter the Provisioning state. All of the tasks in the Maintenance section of the node template, including the Apply Updates task, are performed.
To monitor the progress of the tasks, see Step 4: Monitor Software Update Progress.
