Glossary

To find a term in the glossary, click the letter of the alphabet that is the first letter in the term you want to look up.

You can also read glossary terms within the text of Help by clicking the underlined glossary term links. After you click a glossary link, the glossary term and definition appear in a pop-up window. To close the window, click anywhere on the screen.

AddOnTFX

The name of the directory where XML files are placed to extend Windows Movie Maker transitions and effects. You must create this directory.

DirectX transform

An object built with the DirectX Media SDK and used to build special effects. Windows Movie Maker uses DirectX transforms that are installed on the system and referenced in an XML file.

output video buffer

The memory buffer that the effect or transition writes to for each frame.

pitch

The distance, in bytes, between two memory addresses that represent the beginning of one bitmap line and the beginning of the next bitmap line.

render

To draw video output into the output video buffer.

transform

The generic term for both a transition and an effect for Windows Movie Maker, used to enhance visual content.

video buffer A

The first input buffer for a transition, or the only input buffer for an effect. Effects read each pixel in this buffer for every frame and write the result into the output buffer. For transitions, this is video being transitioned FROM. Windows Movie Maker uses 24-bit RGB natively, though 32-bit may be used in a DXT.

video buffer B

The second input buffer in a transition. This is the video image being transitioned TO.
