WDS revision update, expanded applicability rules, auto-approve revisions

Some customers have reported that update package for KB917013 was being deployed to WSUS clients without having approved the update for installation on their WSUS servers. The original update release, released February 2007 as an optional update, was only applicable on systems which had a version of Windows Desktop Search installed. The recent update Revision 105, had the applicability logic expanded to be applicable to all systems regardless if a prior version of Windows Desktop Search was installed, IF of course, approved in the WSUS Administrative UI or via Administrator-set auto-approval rules.

The initial update would have only been installed if the update had been either auto, or manually approved, and if the applicability criteria was met on the client (that WDS was installed). For some customers, because the original update was approved for install, but because of the previous applicability rules to apply only to clients which had WDS installed, the update was not actually installed.

So what happened with this revision and why did it seemingly deploy itself to all systems in my environment? WSUS by default is set to auto-approve update revisions to minimize administrative overhead and make sure distribution “just works”. Keeping in mind, revisions are only titled as such, when metadata or applicability rules of an update package change, never the binaries. Revisions are also of course only auto-approved via this setting, if the original update is approved.

With the expanded applicability rules, and the WSUS default setting to auto-approve new revisions, it may have appeared as if this update was deployed without approval. The initial version of the update would have had to have been approved, and the “auto-approve revisions” option on (by default) in order for this revision to have also been approved and deployed.

To Recap:

The initial February 2007 release had to be purposely checked/approved by WSUS admin s sfor distribution, because it was an Optional update.
All subsequent metadata-only revisions to that WSUS admin approved February 2007 release would then also be automatically approved for distribution.
The initial February approval is retained throughout the life of the update, regardless of revision.

That said, We will be tightening the criterea for Revisions so that auto-approval of revision behaivors are more predictable and of similar scope as the originial approved update, as we appreciate the confusion this behaivor caused.

Cross post from my comment on the WU Blog: http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/2007/10/12/response-to-recent-web-posts.aspx#2251503 I believe the way this update was packaged and presented, undermines the logic we have come to expect from WSUS updates. The problem is that the package is presented internally as a revision -update-, which are by default -always- automatically approved (your other approval settings don't override this), but it was combined with a scope change, that allowed the package to also install WDS on systems that did not have it previously. It is the second behavior that causes the problem. Installation on systems that did not have it previously, is NOT an -update-, they should not behave as such. Revision 105 was called "Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP (KB917013)". Classification: Update Now from the name alone, it looks like its not an update, but a complete installation (which it was). I never got to see the name before the fact of course, because it auto-approved and installed itself. The classification is "Update", and this is what troubles me. Surely, if this "update" can install itself on systems without previous revisions, it does not belong in the "update" classification? This should have been split into 2 packages.

An -update- with new revision number 105, possibly with a slighty differnet name including the word "update". This would have been automatically approved if the default option for revisions auto-approving was not altered by the admin. The scope would be only install on systems with previous revisions of WDS
A new package, called "Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP (KB917013)", possibly a new revision number, but certainly a different classification. I don't have a list of all the WSUS classifications here, but I am sure there is one that is suitable, wasn't their something for new Windows features?

This is why I don't regret disabling Windows Update and anything related to it. If you want to update Windows use WindizUpdate.com from inside Firefox they give you updates that you need, not some CPU hungry waste of bandwidth like Windows Desktop search.

This is not the result of an auto-approval rule. This is the result of the server setting automatically approve new revisions for updates that have already been approved.

Following are the ways to check if your WSUS server has been configured to auto-approve new revisions for already approved updates.

If you have WSUS 2 server Launch the WSUS 2 web Administration tool Click Options Click Automatic Approvals options See the section "Revisions to updates" If the button "Automatically approve the latest revision of the update" is selected, then the server will auto-approve new revisions of already approved updates.
If you have WSUS 3 server Open WSUS 3 Administration tool Go to Update Services -> Options Select Automatic Approvals In the window that pops up, select "Advanced" tab See the state of checkbox "Automatically approve new revisions of updates that are already approved". If that is selected, then the server will auto-approve new revisions of already approved updates. In both WSUS 2 and WSUS 3, the above options are selected by default. Hope this helps

Also, I am wondering, how you you determine the "scope of applicability" for updates in WSUS? I don't see anything clearly different in the update that indicates it will install itself onto computers that don't have it, instead of just updating the previous version.

Bobbie Harder's explanation makes no sense - other posters above have clearly pointed out that what was approval only for an update to a PC with WDS on it has morphed into approval for installation of the whole product. This is completely unacceptable. I spent some time yesterday removing WDS from all the PCs in our small business, which I could have spent a lot more productively doing other tasks. The "Automatically approve new revisions of updates that are already approved" setting is now turned off in WSUS, and I would advise everyone to do the same. MS need to apologise for what has happened, rather than try to justify it, and should be issuing an update ASAP that will allow WSUS Admins to remove the WDS malware. I would not like to be the sysadmin who reportedly wound up with 3000 PCs having this installed...

We don't install patches that are designated as "updates" here though we do send over critical and security updates. I don't believe Desktop Search was 2 was ever installed via WSUS here? Was it part of an update rollup or bundled in something else? We sure got 3.01 regardless, and it was a big suprise. Cost us a lot of time and effort at the Helpdesk level. Very disappointing. My question is the same as everyone else's. How do you propose to fix this problem? We have taken numerous Outlook 2003 calls at our Helpdesk that resolve themselves as soon as Desktop Search is removed through the Control Panels. Thank you, Brad Terhune

As mentioned a GPO to disable the service will work as well but will require the system to restart for that to take effect. The update itself also has an .adm file that you can import into your GPO's to control the behaviour of the WDS client as well. The settings are at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917013 you can get the .adm by running the update with a /extract. The following settings might be useful: Prevent indexing Microsoft Office Outlook Prevent indexing uncached Exchange Folders Prevent Indexing Certain Paths Prevent Indexing of Certain File Types

You missed somthing here, this is not an 'approval' problem. This patch should not have been installed on systems that doesn't have WDS. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN UPDATE ! In the future how can I tell if a new 'update' will be install on all computers or only those who need it ? Before october 24th I was a big defender of WSUS, but now I feel a little ashamed of using it. It will take us many days of work to undo the « mistake » you made.

I may have an explanation why we may think that kb917013 got installed on system even if the update is not approve or even declined. Let me do a little explanation : o October 23th, 1h AM, my WSUS server synchronize with Microsoft and recevied the update definition (metadata) for kb917013 revision 105 o My server is configure to auto-approved revisions for an already approved update (as many of you I'm sure). So the revision for update kb917013 got approved o October 24th, 9h AM, I plug my laptop in the network and boot. The Windows Update Client reported to my WSUS server and identified the kb917013 (revision 105) update as needing to be download o October 24th, 11h AM the download of update kb917013 was completed on my laptop o October 24th, 13h PM I read about the problem with kb917013 on the Internet and declined the update on my server. o October 24th, 16h PM, as define by GPO the update kb917013 got installed on my system My understanding is that once a computer identifies that a patch is needed it will be installed. It doesn't matter if you declined the approval afterwards, the computer never check again with WSUS to see if the status of the update changed before installing it.

Whoever approved this bulls--t needs to be fired. You've made a very, VERY serious mistake in judgement here. You do NOT mess with the trust of your customers. This is non-negotiable. This can not be overstated. I find myself having to manually remove this software from all the servers and desktops in our organisation because there doesn't appear to be a way to do it automatically.

My users have aproximatly a dozen network drives that they use regularly, in order for them to search now they need to index the network, meaning an index thats 10% of the size of whats being indexed, which is hdd room the users dont have, there would be no real productivity increase, as they where able to search before, desktop searching is only usefull for people who hit save without looking at where theyre saving, the lost productivity however is very obvious, all our computers slowed to a crawl, including our servers, our network was jammed, and people where confused and calling tech support, the productivity lost by this "update" was huge, compared to 1% of user being able to find lost files 3% faster than before... I dont see how you can defend this. Making the software available for those who want it is one thing, forcing it on all users was... well... wrong.

Our updates are managed by an IT company. Needless to say you must have done this on all thier clients. Thank you we will have to pay them now to remove it from all our systems, They claim its not their fault. Thank you very much.

IMHO, MS shouldn't be blamed for all of this. After some detective work I found this: A restored backup of our WSUS server had the Feb 2007 WDS 3.01 was approved for install for all computers but needed by none. Automatically Approve previously approved updates was on. It was never an issue because no computers needed it but it still should not have been approved for install!!! It was patiently waiting for months to get a new detection algorithm. My bad... I do agree that we should have been told ahead of time that the detection behavior was changing. It is in there under the revision notes: "The applicability rules or prerequisites have changed. This type of change means that the set of machines on which the new revision is offered may be different from the set of machines on which the old revision is offered." By the time I got to read it, it was too late. :-{ I do think they should have classified it differently (under Tools?). Just my two cents... Tom S

I have over 130 servers this has been "Dumped on". Reading the Comments made by the WSUS team is a joke. The fact it has been approved/not approved by us poor administrator, thinking we had done the right thing and what does MS do. It drops the application on to the servers and brings them to the knees. just finger poiting at ms would be to easy - although I %&$$"!!! surely it was a mistake by ms defining it as an update, but in big environments - you realy should use a staging aera and testing with updates. this is a standard rule for all production environments. and for all thise complaining about hardware - well there are virtualization tools availible for no cost.

I can GUARANTEE the earlier revision was NOT selected for install. When I originally went in to 3.01 to check why it had gone to all the machines, only the second revision (Oct. 24) was set to Install. I just went into WSUS 2 to confirm this and provide the actual revision numbers and text, but the updates are now all EXPIRED. Which means MS is finally accepting they F'D up this update. Now MS - TELL US HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM USING WSUS - not some 12 steps of group policy and scripting!!!

After automatic deployment of WDS, hundrets of users started indexing their network shares at the same time. It paralyzed my clustered fileserver for hours and killed a lot of serverbased userprofiles! Worse is, that the .adm file, supposed to prevent this behaviour, doesn't work in my environment and i can't find the reason. The clients just don't care about the settings in this very policy. Any ideas?

Here is a batch file you can deploy to your organization through GPO. Simply copy the text into a .txt file and rename it .bat start %windir%$NtUninstallKB917013$spuninstspuninst /q /norestart Now I have to find a way to block this update from coming in through WSUS, simply blocking it doesnt work.

To turn off auto-approval of revisions:

Start WSUS
Open Update Services
Open Server Name
Select Options
Click on Automatic Approvals
Select the Advanced tab
Uncheck “Automatically approve new revisions of updates that are already approved”
Click Apply and/or OK This will cause revisions to not be auto-approved, which amounts to more time on you, the admin, to handle those.

Ian. Outlook has a great search that works with Outlook. I hate combined search. When I am trying to find a document that contains a certain phrase, I only want to search documents. When I search for a file with a certain name, I don't want to search documents or email. Desktop search is a bad idea. And a real security risk.

@john: Regarding staging areas. Well, staging areas are fine and dandy and best practice of course. In out case, we have never approved WDS in any form via WSUS. Now, why does all my servers and desktop get it? No way a staging area would help us with this, as it got autoinstalled without our knowledge in our live environment.

I walked into work, and almost got fired for this , since my team approves these patches. We had over 100 servers and 1500 workstations reboot overnight for this. This is the worst, I am so disapointed in Microsoft, for doing this, and worst yet not informing us of this. I do hope a lawsuit happens for thousands of dollars of lost productivity , stress and mishaps this has caused. I have been a big fan of WSUS but this takes the cake. Microsoft should provide us with a automatic way to remove this. Just awfull, the trust has been broken, not just at my level, the Administrator, but with our managers, directors and above.

I don't understand 'their unfathomable explanation', so it's my problem. MS spokesman has explained it, and they washed their hands off it. Whether I get their complicated, 8-fold lawyer talk or not, it's my responsibity. Tips my hat to Bob Harder....you guys are really great in customer service. I bet you guys get a peaceful, good night sleep, knowing how great and fruitful and easy solutions and services you provide to your customers. Corporate solutions and services at its best.

Goto www.canonical.com
Download Ubuntu 7.10
Burn it to a new CD and install it. You are saved......

I've been a pro-windows guy since win3.1 but am reevaluating this. More for the WHY than the WHAT concerns me. Assuming that microsoft is a careful company, that implies this was done deliverately. Why? Could it be to index the content on people's computers and report back certain hits on alleged 'questionable' files? This would be easy for them to do and would require minimal bandwidth to report back to home base. Or could it be to force their search technology (and microsoft has the very WORST search tech IMHO) to oppose Google's desktop search (I don't use either). Either this deployment was accidental and microsoft is incompetant, or deliberate but on based on dishonest motives. Either way I no longer trust microsoft and am going to modify the (3rd-party) firewall rules on my machines to block windows updates. This will be big pain to review each and every update they want to deploy, but what other option do I have? I have propritary IP I've been working on for years and do confidential work for customers and it is an unacceptable risk to allow microsoft to paw through my files and those of my customers. This is a short-term solution. Longer term, seeing how very bad vista is (I was on their vista beta, reported some of the major bugs many people are complaining about, but the bugs were all closed as "will not fix" with no explination) I think it may be time to give alternative operating systems a close look. Oh yeah, and sell my 3000 microsoft shares.

We're keeping ours since it is now clear that MS truly does OWN all the computers that have installed it's software. That stock is never gonna crash cause if it ever looks like the stock is floundering MS will just push out an update to wall street. the banks and the rest of the world's computers that "revises" their rating and reinflates their stock value. When will WDS 3 be available through WSUS again? It seems not to be there, when I use search on my WSUS server it finds only 2.6.5 and 2.6.6. Of cource we can install WDS 3 my other means, but it's much easier through WSUS because it automatically installes the correct language- and CPU-version.

here is how to fix the problem:

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Pannel -> Add Remove Programs -> Microsoft Windows ...
After finishing Rebbot the PC.
Goto www.canonical.com
Download Ubuntu 7.10
Burn it to a new CD and install it. You are saved......

The level of fear is not “unprecedented” - the old VIX (now VXO) hit 172 during the 1987 crash. That is the record. The VXO hit 103.41 today which is still 40% below the 1987 crash level. It’s nice to have the VXO around at times like this if only to be able to make valid comparisons with the pre-change VIX.

My only real problem with google analytics is that it doesn’t work very well with a lot of ASP pages, which a lot of clients use nowadays. It can also get kind of hairy when trying to get it to understand what a conversion is. :D Instead of just any click, it needs to be one specific click haha.

The problem is that the package is presented internally as a revision -update-, which are by default -always- automatically approved (your other approval settings don't override this), but it was combined with a scope change, that allowed the package to also install WDS on systems that did not have it previously. It is the second behavior that causes the problem. Installation on systems that did not have it previously, is NOT an -update-, they should not behave as such.

I've been a pro-windows guy since win3.1 but am reevaluating this. More for the WHY than the WHAT concerns me. Assuming that microsoft is a careful company, that implies this was done deliverately. Why? Could it be to index the content on people's computers and report back certain hits on alleged 'questionable' files? This would be easy for them to do and would require minimal bandwidth to report back to home base.

This is not the result of an auto-approval rule. This is the result of the server setting automatically approve new revisions for updates that have already been approved.

Following are the ways to check if your WSUS server has been configured to auto-approve new revisions for already approved updates.

If you have WSUS 2 server Launch the WSUS 2 web Administration tool Click Options Click Automatic Approvals options See the section "Revisions to updates" If the button "Automatically approve the latest revision of the update" is selected, then the server will auto-approve new revisions of already approved updates.
If you have WSUS 3 server Open WSUS 3 Administration tool Go to Update Services -> Options www.kayserimeskenemlak.com Select Automatic Approvals www.kayserimeskenemlak.com/.../satiliklar.htm In the window that pops up, select "Advanced" tab http://www.videoarasana.info/ See the state of checkbox "Automatically approve new revisions of updates that are already approved". If that is selected, then the server will auto-approve new revisions of already approved updates. In both WSUS 2 and WSUS 3, the above options are selected by default. Hope this helps
