New alpha Catalog site available with WSUS 3.0 RC
Want another cool reason to check out the WSUS 3.0 Release Candidate now in public beta, (available after registration from https://connect.microsoft.com)? Well here's one:)
The Microsoft Update Catalog Site Alpha is now ready and integrated wtih the WSUS RC server release! The Catalog site integration will allow you to import optional, and other types of updates (such as drivers), into your WSUS 3.0 RC server, without modifying your on-going subscription options.
This can be useful when importing MS updates, which you'd like to deploy within your environment occassionally but not synch down or manage all the time. For example, a widely distributed QFE, previously available just from the MS Download Center, will be something you will see on the catalog site later this summer. Or what about that one-time optional driver that you really need for a number of your systems. Best of all, soon the catalog will enable you to get that special hotfix, made just for your environment, which only you can import with PSS-issued credentials. Distributing QFEs and hotfixes with the same ease used to distribute publically published updates is a soon-to-be supported feature we're all excited to deliver to you in this Catalog capability!
To try the Catalog Site import feature from the WSUS 3.0 RC admin console, select the udpates node and then choose the 'import updates' context menu.
From there, you can search for updates that are not in your default synch options and add them to your 'basket'. When you have selected all the updates you want to import, click on the 'basket' link to import the updates into your WSUS 3.0 RC server.
Please give us your thoughts and feedback via the Connect WSUS beta site in the feedback page or just come talk to us in the WSUS 3.0 beta newsgoups (available first time from the WSUS Connect site.
Thanks and happy testing!

Hi Kevin... WSUS will take care of the downloading piece (i.e. you don't need to select the download location if you are doing an import into WSUS). Note that to do the import you need to launch the site from the WSUS UI. This will change the "Download" option to "Import". You can do this from the updates node in WSUS... via the "import update..." context menu item. Thanks! NateAnonymous

When i try with IE 7 (test.catalog.update.microsoft.com is a Trusted Site), I get: "The website has encountered a problem." [Error number: 8DDD0020] It has already installed the ActiveX control. Any ideas?Anonymous

Jonathon... Try reloading the site. If you get the error again, remove the "/Error.aspx?id=2380070944" from the url and reload. Hope this helps (we are looking at this from our end as well). Thanks!Anonymous

I'm looking forward to the future feature of adding special hotfixes like KB927891. Too bad it tries opening in Firefox if it is your default browser. Where should the downloadable packages be downloaded to? Somewhere in the WSUSWsusContent folder?Anonymous

Hello, I know that with WSUS 3 you can import other updates / patches / installs into WSUS using the API (which API I don't know). I'm not talking about the alpha catalog site...I mean non-Microsoft pathes. Will there be any examples given for this? For example, if I want file.exe to be installed by my WSUS server what needs to be done? RobAnonymous

I'm failing when trying to access the Microsoft Update Catalog with 8DDD0020 here as well. It briefly flashes to the Home page then immediately goes into the error page. I tried the suggestion above, to remove Error.aspx? and its follow-on text from the URL and F5, and that didn't help. OS: Windows XP with many updates applied Browser: IE7Anonymous
