.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Family Update package revisions coming soon!
Hi WSUS Admins,
Just a heads up to let you know we will be releasing revised .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Family Update packages to address confusion caused from the initial release on 1/27/2009. In these revised packages, we’ve made 2 changes:
1. We’ve reduced the file size of the packages for each architecture (x86 and x64). The original packages were 237 MB in size, the revised packages are 53 MB (x86) and 97 MB (x64).
2. We’ve clarified the titles to minimize confusion about what each package contains and what it is applicable to.
Please note that while the packaging has been updated, there have been no changes made to the binary payload inside these packages, and no new fixes are included beyond those already in the original release on 1/27/2009. Therefore, machines that have previously installed the .NET 3.5 SP1 do not need to install the revised package(s). We expect to publish these revised updates within the next few weeks.
We will expire the old packages the same day we release the new revised packages. The new update packages will be:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86
This combined Service Pack and update is applicable to .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86
This combined Service Pack and update is applicable to systems running a version of .NET prior to version 2.0, or to systems that have no prior version of .NET framework installed.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x64
This combined Service Pack and update is applicable to .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5.
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x64
This combined Service Pack and update is applicable to systems running a version of .NET prior to version 2.0, or to systems that have no prior version of .NET framework installed.
We appreciate your feedback and thank you!

Hm, you have to add the Language Pack file size to the 53 MB for x86 in case you're running a non-english system, true? That's an additional ~32,4 MB package on German languaged Windows XP systems. The Language Pack files for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 are BUNDLED into KB951847 and are not offered as an additional, OPTIONAL update for a reason I DON'T and WON'T understand. These 32,4 MB heavy Language Pack (I've never asked MS for to install it on my system) aka "91a16a2e3d7e0aae83e948a5890d94eeece49421" contains 21,9 MB of MSU files for Windows Vista (Gold and SP1), which are USELESS on a Non-Vista Windows system. The "new" version of KB951847 consits of some additional files, all in all 12 packages. The REAL total size of the "new" KB951847 "version" summs up to 102 MB for German languaged Windows. That's for sure less than the 280 MB of the previous/original KB951847, but it's IMHO STILL FAR TO BIG to be reasonable. I second Lawrence's comment on that. Not really amused, FreudiAnonymous

Short correction to my previous comment: KB951847 consits of 5 single packages on non-english 32bit Windows versions
- .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (52, 3 MB)
- (German) Language Pack (32,4 MB)
- Hotifx KB958484 for .NET 3.5 SP1 (1,35 MB)
- Hotfix KB958483 for .NET 3.0 SP2 (6,91 MB)
- Hotfix KB958481 for .NET 2.0 SP2 (8,56 MB)

If I understood it correctly, this would be a single package containing 3.5 SP1 + the tree patches from Family Update. Am I right? Do we have an estiamed publish date?Anonymous

This is a good start. At least it clarifies the mess of the existing collection, simplifies the number of packages, and reduces the file size (though I believe there will still need to be separate packages for XP/2003 and Vista/2008 platforms, No?). However, the CORRECT fix for this fiasco is to issue a separate package for the .NET Framework v2.0 SP2 for .NET 2.0 ONLY environments, and a separate package for the .NET Framework v3.x environments. Also, I think it highly unethical to attempt to FORCE the installation of the .NET 3.x packages onto machines that ONLY need the .NET 2.0 SP2 update, or to force the installation of .NET20/.NET30/.NET35 onto machines that do not even have .NET 2.0 or later installed -- most often for very specific and intentional reasons -- Like: It's not NEEDED! While these revisions certainly simply the current situation, they do not, by any means, RESOLVE the injustices in the current methodologies. I still have three machines that need .NET 2.0 Service Pack 2 =ONLY= -- what is your suggestion for updating these machines via WSUS?Anonymous

Hi, I am trying to deploy .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family update for .NET version 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 but when I try importing KB951847 through my WSUS I get this message: ! This update cannot be imported into Windows Server Update Services, because it does not have the required applicability information. What does “ does not have the required applicability information” mean? Instead of importing, as instructed on the catalog site, I have downloaded the package named above but how do I update my users’ systems with this package using WSUS? ‘ would appreciate getting your feedback soon. Thank you.Anonymous
