MSSQLTIGER is back in Europe

The MSSQLTIGER is going to be back in European region next week for two different events. The first one is the SQL Day in Poland and the second one is Tuga IT 2016 in Portugal. As always, SQL Server in-person events are always a good opportunity for us to connect with the #SQLFamily and gather feedback for #SQLServer. Look for Sunil Agarwal (T) next week and stop by to say HI or give feedback or attend one of the sessions that he will be delivering.

image SQLDay is an annual Polish SQL Server User Group conference. Polish SQL Server User Group hosts monthly meetings for several hundred data enthusiasts in 8 Polish cities. This event is happening between 16th and 18th May, 2016 at Congress Centre of Wroclaw, ul. Wystawowa 1. The first day is the pre-conference day and the next two days are conference days. The second and third day are dedicated to 1-hour sessions from speakers across the world. The speaker list has some very well known names.

Session Name: In-memory OLTP and In-memory Analytics concepts

Date: 16th May

Speaker: Sunil Agarwal

Session Type: Pre-Conference (Full Day)
Session Abstract:
Speeding up OLTP workload with memory-optimized tables in SQL Server 2016
In-memory OLTP technology speeds up the transactional workload throughput upto 30x faster. Many customers have successfully deployed this technology to improve performance of their workloads. In this workshop, we will go over the key concepts for in-memory tables. We will use these learnings to walk through a series of examples to show case performance, index performance and memory/storage management. At the end of this lab, we expect you will have a good understanding of in-memory OLTP technology and the key scenarios that can benefit from it.

Speeding up Analytics Queries using Columnstore Index in SQL Server 2016
In-memory analytics can speed up the analytics queries up to 100x and provide 10x storage reduction on average. It achieves this by storing data in columnar storage format instead of rows and processing the analytics queries using a special ‘batchmode’ execution. Many customers have successfully deployed in-memory analytics for their Data Warehouse workloads. In this workshop, we will take a deep dive into columnstore technology to understand the physical structures of the index, data compression techniques and the query processing. We will follow these conceptual learnings through a series of examples to show case the technology. Additionally, this workshop will introduce you to the key value proposition of real-time operational analytics and walk you through conceptual topics and complete the discussion with few examples.

Session Name: Clustered ColumnStore Index in SQL Server 2016 (Level 400)

Date/Time: 17th May, 12:00 – 13:00

Speaker: Sunil Agarwal

Duration: 60 minutes

Session Abstract: The updateable clustered columnstore in SQL Server 2016 offers a leading solution for your Data Warehouse workload with order of magnitude better data compression and query performance over traditional Btree based schemas. This session describes columnstore index internals with deep insight into data compression methodology and achieving high query performance with new changes in SQL Server 2016.

Session Name: In-memory OLTP: Concepts and improvements in SQL Server 2016 (Level 300)

Date/Time: 18th May, 16:00 – 17:00

Speaker: Sunil Agarwal

Duration: 60 minutes

Session Abstract: SQL Server 2014 introduced in-memory technology for optimizing OLTP workloads. This talk provides an overview of the in-memory technology using common use cases. We will examine how in-memory tables and indexes are managed. You will also learn how to provision and control memory usage, how durability and high availability is achieved and how these constructs and operations are integrated together with disk-based tables to provide you a seamless experience.

Born in February 2014 as the result of 4 years of collaboration of the Data Platform professionals & enthusiasts in Portugal. In 2015 TUGA has started to support different ranges of User Groups and Events, which resulted in the TUGA IT 2016 event in the year 2016. Tuga IT 2016 will be hosted at the Microsoft HQ at Lisbon, Portugal from 19th – 21st May, 2016. The first two days are workshops and Saturday, 21st May is a free day with multiple sessions under different tracks like Azure IT Pro, Data Platform, Data Platform: Dev/DBA/Analytics, Integration, Office 365, Programming and SharePoint.

Session Name: Deep walkthrough of some of the most popular/innovative features in SQL Server Storage Engine

Date: 20th May (Full Day)

Speaker: Sunil Agarwal

Session Abstract:
This workshop will focus on basics of concurrency/isolation levels, best practices of using TempDB, Internals of data compressions, AlwaysOn Readable Secondary, and In-memory, both memory-optimized tables and columnstore index, technologies and the new enhancements in SQL Server 2016. Each area will have multiple demos with practical guidelines for usage.

Objectives
