Disable or Enable Hibernation in Windows 7

I was using the Beta version of Windows 7 from couple of months (upgraded to RTM couple of days back).

Recently I figured out that the space available on my C:\ drive was exhausting. I remembered the XP days, wherein I can go and delete the hibernation file from my system (using Disk Cleanup) and gain around 3-4 GB of space on my drive. So I ran Disk Clean and was surprised to see that we do not have the option for removing hibernate file from my system. I tried figuring out the file, but without any success.

Binged around on the web and figured out that we have a tool powercfg (was actually available from Vista/2003 timeframe)  for enabling/disabling hibernation in Window 7. The tool can be used to control power settings and configure computers to default to Hibernate or Standby modes. Thus you can use the following commands for enabling/disabling hibernation on Windows 7.

Enable hibernation

  • powercfg –h on

Disable hibernation

  • powercfg –h off
