Hide the IE7 Command Bar
Here's a registry hack for removing Internet Explorer 7's toolbar with the standard buttons on it (like favorites, print, etc). In IE6 you could move/hide the command bar just like any toolbar, but in IE7 it's not so easy. On my PC they're just wasted space because everything up there is already so easily accessible from the keyboard (Ctrl+P = Print, Alt+A = Favorites, etc). The "basic" buttons are still visible on the address bar line (like Back, Forward, Refresh, Stop).
Registry Commands
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\CommandBar] "Enabled"=dword:00000000
Of course you can make the buttons small too, but that's still valuable screen real estate.
Update (8/22/07): For Windows Vista 64bit users, the is a different location that IE uses, it's [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\CommandBar]
and here are the 64bit reg files: hide, show

Oh man, this is exactly what I've been looking for! You can "remove" the toolbar by customizing it and deselecting everything on it-- but once you save, it it puts everything back. :( Try it yourself. For the longest time I've had one icon on the toolbar for this reason. I want to remove everything, but can't. But this registry setting does exactly what I want-- it removes the darn thing entirely!Anonymous

Jeff, yeah I agree it's a pain! Martin, <lol> there are many better plugins to tackle, VS stuff. :) But have fun and I'll try it when you've got it written.Anonymous

Great tip. The registry seems to be the cause of most of the problems. I would recommend making a backup of your registry before making the changes using the registry files show above. It is common to see tech people use .reg files like this because it is a convenient way to make registry changes without having to open up regedit and find the key in question.Anonymous

Try pressing the Alt, Space and H keys simultaneously. Do this after you hit F11 and enter full screen mode. I found that you may have to do this several times before it works. Worth a shot anyway.Anonymous

I later figured that as you cannot use the new tabbing function with a hiden toolbar it is better to hide the menue bar as it still works when hidden, it is easy to remember Alt+F, E, V, A or T. Still left icons disabled as there is more room for tabs. Gnasher.Anonymous

Worked like a charm. I've already found a way to put the menu bar above the address bar (via Tuneup Utilities 2008), so now if I could just find out how to hide the search bar, I'd be a happy camper.Anonymous

That reg setting works beautifully. If you want to re-enable the command bar, of course just change the value to 00000001.Anonymous
