Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 - Versions
I always try to make my posts as clear as possible. Right now I really have even a greater reason to be more clear since I don't want to end up being quoted by Mary Jo Foley and call my post funny and confusing as she did with Ben's post on the whole NDA thing.
Currently we basically have two versions with v3.0
- Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 Small Business Edition
- Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 Professional
So what versions do we have when releasing Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0? Will there be big changes? Is every version the same? Is it supported on Windows Server 2008? Since I expect a few questions around this topic I thought it was smart to dedicate a blog post to it.
The following versions will be available with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0:
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Workgroup Edition
This version is limited to 5 or fewer users. It can be installed on Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, any of the supported Windows Server 2003 editions, or Microsoft Windows Server 2008. This version is limited to a single organization and a single computer that is running Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Server.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Edition
This version has no user limit and is limited to a single organization. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Edition Server can, however, be installed to more than one computer.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Enterprise Edition
This version has no user limit. Additional features include support for multiple organizations, multiple server instances, and role-based service installation. Rolebased services let you increase performance by installing component services on different computers.

As you probably know, but might have missed in this post there is actually an additional but rare version of Microsoft CRM 3, the Service Provider Edition which even has it's own DLL-versions. (I guess you just forgot) Do you know how this will be licensed in CRM 4.0? GustafAnonymous

Hi. I have two questions on Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Workgroup Edition:
- "This version is limited to 5 or fewer users" 5 or less? Really? Shouldn't it be 75? Common SBS has more than 5, but still has single server to deploy CRM
- "...Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition" I guess you mean SBS 2003 Premium Edition Thanks!

- Yes 5 or fewer. Deploying on SBS requires Microsoft Dynamics CRM Professional.
- You are correct, it should have said Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition

I have seen that there are also new Read-Only licenses. I found in the Whats new in crm4.0 this: Read-Only: Clients who use this license type can only view records and data in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. They cannot modify records or data. A user configured with this license type does not consume a CAL. Does this mean they are for free ??Anonymous

I am also wondering about the CRM external connector. I currently feel very limited by the fact that I have to spend 14000 to make a simple web form to intake customer support data. Any news on licensing/pricing changes for external web apps?Anonymous

Nathan, you do not need an External Connector license to present a web form and take data into your CRM system (e.g. a website enquiry form submission creating a lead record in CRM). You need the External Connector license for any interactive functionality where data is presented back to the visitor (e.g. a customer support portal or a partner extranet). NeilAnonymous

What is the easiest and most secure method (CRM 3.0 right now) to have clients manage their information in CRM (Contacts, Phone #, Address, etc.)? Is it IForms or just allowing each client admin customer rights to MS CRM? Another way?Anonymous
