Losing mindshare
Charlie was practicing his letters today. He is three and a half. Sometimes he likes to pretend that he is writing out words (even when he is not holding some sort of pencil.) That’s what he was doing today. Betsy was a bit perplexed by it because he is just focusing on a few letters and not more. She says he’s been doing this for a few weeks. He came up to me at the dinner table and practiced with his fingers, writing the letters A, L, O on the table next to me. As he did this he chanted, “A L O L O A O L” in a monotonic rhythm that pleased him to no end. Betsy was taken aback. I think she was worried that I would take offense, so she tried to correct him. “No, Charlie,” she said. “M S N”
