The killer bots are coming...
...not really!
But wouldn't life be a whole lot more interesting if they were. Thankfully the kind of bot that I am talking about sits safely inside the CLR and tells you things you want to know like train timetables and Encarta questions.
Ian Moulster in my group is running a cool UK competition for developers to code bots using a Messenger SDK. Head over to www.britbot.co.uk
The last time I coded a bot was back when I worked at an ISV in Belfast I coded up a bot using Java and Jabber which allowed me to organise the age old office process of making tea for your team:
MarkJ > Whose turn is it to make tea?
Tea > It is your turn! (tells everyone on team)
... several replies later from team to the Tea bot
Tea > Gary, Russell, Richard and Mike want Tea. Sam wants Coffee
Now, I thought about doing this internally here at Microsoft but the tea tray culture doesn't really exist and could turn out to be quite expensive given the number of people in my group (60+) and the costs of a latte in the Starbucks on the ground floor! :-)
Maybe this would be a good bot for a small ISV similar to the one at my old job. Would be great to hear if others have similar hair brain ideas...
