Lync 2013 Mobile Apps Available for Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad and Android

By Jason Lewis, Program Manager, Lync Mobile Team

Last month at Lync Conference we showed our Lync 2013 mobile clients and shared that the apps for Windows Phone and iOS would be available in March. Today, I’m excited to share that the Windows Phone app is available today and that the app for iPhone and iPad have been submitted and should be available this week are available now.  **Update (4/1)** The Android app is also now available.  Lync 2013 Mobile brings a number of improvements and new features.  We will dive into these in depth in future blog articles, but for now here is a quick look at a couple of my favorite new features.

VoIP & Video
This was our number one feedback item in app stores and forums, and we listened.  Now you can make and receive VoIP & video calls from all Lync 2013 Mobile apps.

Desktop & Application Share Viewing (iPad only)
Improving on the ability to view PowerPoint in meetings with Lync 2010 Mobile iPad 1.5 release, we have added desktop and application share viewing.  Now when in meetings you will not miss content shared by others.

I encourage you to download and use the Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad and Android apps today and let us know what you think!

@Tuomas - Lync 2013 for Windows Phone is available only on Window Phone 8 platform as we have dependencies on some APIs that are only available on WP8 operating system. @Oliver - I would recommend posting your question in our Lync Forums here - social.technet.microsoft.com/.../threads

@Vignesh - When using Lync Windows Store app (for Windows 8 and Windows RT), you can see content that is shared by other people, but you can't share from the app itself.  We have some technical limitations due to the sandboxing of Windows Store apps.  However, we know that sharing is an important feature, and we are actively working on improving this in future updates.

I'd like to add my wish for mobile devices (iOS, Android and Windows Phone) and Windows RT to have an attendee client. If this was available I wouldn't need any other online meeting service. Unfortunately, currently I have to look to other options, but unfortunately the other options don't work with Windows RT. Oh for a more harmonious computing world! Please continue to innovate. If it's a money problem make it an option for more $$, but please make it reasonable. Please! Consider these items. Thanks. I love Lync and look forward to full Skype integration (video too) just need a couple more key features. Maybe this is all coming via new Skype clients! Hopefully there's a solution soon.

I personally do not see a mistake with Windows 8 It is so advanced that the users are scared to use it. It is so simple to use of a great design that it is hard to users. I have used 7, 8, 10. The problems with 8 itself is timing. Users need more time. Everyone had a fit leaving XP. Overtime they got use to the simple solutions of 7. In time it will be the same with 8. Windows just needs to calm their roll and let people adjust. It is true that most business and servers is not compatible with 8.

@Bill & @Sean - Lync 2013 Mobile apps require Lync 2013 Server CU1 or above.  Read more why we have the requirement here - blogs.technet.com/.../why-is-lync-2013-mobile-asking-me-to-use-lync-2010.aspx

So where is the Windows Phone 7.5/7.8 support?   Don't tell me that these users are an afterthought to Microsoft.  The 7.5 phone OS is barely 1 1/2 years old and the 7.8 OS was just released this year.  Seems like a major afterthought ... Is it Microsofts intention to force people to get a Windows 8 phone just for the new client?  I can't see that happening. Guys you need to get this update for all your phone users (7.5, 7.8 and 8)

The app is telling me "You can't sign in with this version of Lync. Please install Lync 2010." Swipe to dismiss.   I'm trying to access my O365 Lync from my HTC 8X on Verizon.   :(

Is there any plan to allow the Lync 2013 mobile clients to connect to a Lync 2010 backend?  The desktop app works great with 2010.  More than a little annoying.

This Lync 2013 Mobile is awesome app, but I definately think that you should really consider to make that also available for at least Windows Mobile 7.5 or 7.8. There are huge amount of people that has bought just recently Mango devices like Nokia Lumia 900 and it is not fare to force them to buy Nokia 920. Think about apple devices, you are able to use this new Lync 2013 mobile even Iphone 4, 4s why not Windows mango devices...??

Hi, I've updated our Lync 2013 environment to CU1 and everything seems to be fine. I can still connect with my Lync2010 App on iPhone to the server and it works like a charm. But when using the Lync2013 App on the same phone it tells me, that the server is unavailable. I thought, it might be a good idea to start the logging tool on the phone, but logging is always disabled again, when you leave the logging setting page to return to the login page... Does someone have an idea, what goes wrong? Oliver

What could I be missing that is causing the Windows 8 Phone not to work as well as IOS? I’ve noticed a difference in behavior between my Windows 8 Phone with Lync 2013 Mobile and my iPad with respect to inbound calls.  The iPad will ring as expected for all calls when Lync is active or not, but the Windows phone will only ring occasionally when Lync is not the active application.   When the Windows phone does ring, subsequent calls from the same number rarely ring when Lync 2013 Mobile is not the active application.  I do see a 1 or 2 next to the Lync icon on the home screen but no ring behavior.  I can wait about 20 minutes and try again from the same number and the Windows phone will ring, but not all the time after waiting. Push notifications for the Windows phone for IM work 100% of the time. When signed into the iPad application, active or in the background all works as expected.

Follow up to - Windows 8 Phone vs. IOS experience It would seem that the issue is resolved.  I migrated my reverse proxy to a Kemp HLB VM and now there is no issue on the Windows 8 Phone with Lync 2013.  The reverse proxy was formerly on TMG and seemed to be working fine with Lync 2010 Mobile and Lync 2013 Server.  The IOS iPad and iPhone had not issues on TMG or now Kemp.

For some reason the Lync Client only receives calls while it is open in the foreground. If you are working with any other application on the Windows Phone, you wont receive any calls. But this works with Android and iPhone-Client. Is this a known Problem?

Lync 2013 Front End Server client using Lync 2013 IOS IPAD client with Lync 2010 edge server can do audio/video calls only when on corporate network. When on 4G LTE Cellular or public wifi presence works but audio/video does not. Android Lync 2013 clients do work over public wifi for audo/video. What is up with IOS? What do I need to change to enable IOS Lync 2013 clients to do audo/video calls over public wife or cellular? It works for all other clients other than IOS. - Please advise :)

For those having problem with lync not working in the background on windows phone: To enable the phone to passively accept messages you have to activate/configure push notifications on client-side and server-side. After this you should be able to get calls and messages without having to run the program in the foreground.

Absolutely ridiculous: No support for Windows Phone 7.8 devices No support for VoIP/video on Lync 2010 client and then No support for VoIP/video in Lync 2013 client without Lync 2013 backend Is this Microsofts 'winning' enterprise strategy? Anyone who likes Windows Phone and thinks that dding Lync to their device will be great is going to be sorely disappointed. Lync is a great tool desktop bar some rather glaring omissions, but the mobile fragmentation is not poor, it is a joke.
