I'm not sure people are paying attention, but Microsoft just announced new file formats for the upcoming Office 12 release. The new formats (which are different from the current XML used in Word and Excel) will probably make it easier to share Office files (even without having Office). Here are some interesting tidbits for someone that's not patient enough to read the two word documents describing the new formats and the enhancements they will bring:

  • Files are XML text with ZIP compression
  • They should be much smaller than the current ones
  • It should be easier to recover, since it's all just XML
  • New extensions with an x in the end will be used (docx, pptx, xlsx, etc.)
  • Documents with macros will have their own extensions (docm, pptm, xlsm, etc.)
  • Old formats are still supported (of course :-)

The new file formats are royalty-free and Microsoft expects that to make it easy for partners to provide tools that can manipulate these Office files.

By the way, none of this is even in beta yet....

  

Aqui vão alguns detalhes para quem não tem paciência suficiente para ler os dois documentos do Word descrevendo os novos formatos e os melhoramentos que eles trarão:

  • Os arquivos são texto XML com compressão ZIP
  • Eles serão bem menores que os atuais
  • Serão fáceis de consertar, já que tudo é só XML
  • As extensões serão semelhantes às atuais, com um x no final (docx, pptx, xlsx, etc.)
  • Documentos com macros terão suas próprias extensões (docm, pptm, xlsm, etc.)
  • Formatos antigos ainda funcionarão (é claro :-)

Os novos formatos de arquivos não precisam de royalties e a Microsoft espera facilitar que parceiros forneçam ferramentas para manipular estes novos arquivos do Office.

Por sinal, isto nem tem uma beta ainda...
