More Team Developer + Data Edition Merge Information

Per October 1st 2008 MSDN subscribers who own or buy a new Visual Studio Team System Developer license are entitled to also install the Visual Studio Team System Database Edition, and  MSDN subscribers who own or buy a new Visual Studio Team System Database Edition license are entitled to install the Visual Studio Team System Developer Edition. This is the immediate benefit for current owners of the two SKU's merging in the upcoming Visual Studio Team System codename "Rosario" version.

Based on this announcement we received many questions, seeking clarification, in this post I will try to answer the six most common questions.

Q: Exactly which Visual Studio versions covered as part of the this program?

A: If you own one of the following licenses:

Q: We are a Microsoft partner and received our Visual Studio Team Development Edition license through the Microsoft Partner ISV Program or Microsoft Partner CDS Program?

A: This change will also applies to the licenses of Visual Studio Team System Development Edition that Microsoft partners received through the Microsoft Partner ISV and CDS Program’s.

 

Q: Do I need to re-install or un-install my existing Edition before installing the new additional Edition?

A: No, this is not needed, the Editions install in an additive fashion; you can install in the Developer Edition after the Database Edition or the other way around.

 

Q: I have Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed, after I installed the new Edition, do I have to re-install Visual Studio 2008 SP1?

A: Yes, after installing additional features you need to re-install SP1 to update the new binaries installed.

 

Q: I have Visual Studio 2005 SP1 installed, after I installed the new Edition, do I have to re-install Visual Studio 2005 SP1?

A: Yes, after installing additional features you need to re-install SP1 to update the new binaries installed. Also Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals prerequisites that Visual Studio 2005 SP1 is installed before installing the Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals.

 

Q: How does the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR fit in to this?

A: The Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR version only installs on top of the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition release. So if you first have to install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition, then install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 which is a prerequisite of the GDR and then install the GDR release.
