Did someone mention Win2K??

Windows_2000_logo In my last post about browsers, Jeremy left a comment about Win2k

# re: Upgrade from IE 6 … please

Frank - how many are using Win2K? A point was raised in my comments that there's still too many folks stuck on Win2K!

Well, since you asked, we may as well look at the spread of all OS

Perc. Operating System
50.02% Windows XP
34.84% Windows Vista
5.42% Unknown
4.53% Linux
1.52% Windows 2003
1.08% Windows 2000
1.05% Mac OS X
0.35% Windows NT
0.35% Windows CE
0.35% Windows 98
0.13% Windows 64
0.13% Windows
0.10% Windows FXRunTi
0.06% Windows ME
0.03% PPC
0.03% Windows NT6.1
0.03% Sun

“Unknown” has me beat.

What is surprising is that HALF of the readers are still on Windows XP!

What is Windows 64? The combination of Win2k3 64 bit and XP 64bit machines? And where are these stats from? And how is Win2k3 so low, surely there are more servers out there than that?

imho "What is surprising is that HALF of the readers are still on Windows XP!" should actually read: "What is surprising is that only HALF of the readers are still on Windows XP!" Come on, the reality is that there are serious issues with existing users moving to Windows Vista.  And by issues I'm referring to it being orders of magnitude of slower than Windows XP, and for what, a slightly better UI experience.  The reality is that for your average Joe they will go oo-aa for 20 secs before deciding that Vista is a slow and painful experience.  Give them a couple of months and they will be moving to a Mac.  I'd much prefer to equip my friends with WinXP which at least will be snappy to use.

I think we need to be really worried about the folks still using Windows 64. I mean sheesh, Win95 was bad enough, I can only imagine what Windows was like 30 years prior to that ;)
