Connector for Microsoft Dynamics support for Microsoft Dynamics CRM beyond Dynamics CRM version 2016

As announced in this post, the most recent version of Connector for Microsoft Dynamics  (3.4.304.1) (“Connector”) supports Dynamics CRM 2016 (8.x.x.x) both on-premises and online. Today (April 8th, 2016) we are announcing that Dynamics CRM version 2016 will be the last major version of Dynamics CRM to be supported by Connector.

Support matrices for Connector for Microsoft Dynamics as of 10/09/2018

If your Dynamics product version does not appear in these matrices, then it is not supported by Connector for Microsoft Dynamics.

Note: Mainstream support for Dynamics CRM 2011 ended on 7/12/2016 as did official Connector support for interoperability with Dynamics CRM 2011.  The official Microsoft support lifecycle website can be found here.

What does this mean for my current and future Connector implementations?

  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV

    • Dynamics NAV 2016 includes a new interoperability framework for connecting with Dynamics CRM 2015 (7.x.x.x) and successor versions.  We recommend existing Dynamics NAV connections to Dynamics CRM versions greater than 2015 transition to this new framework once the Dynamics NAV instance is updated to Dynamics NAV 2016 or beyond.  New implementations of Dynamics NAV 2016 or beyond and Dynamics CRM 2015 or beyond should use the new NAV framework as well.  More information on this technology can be found at the following link: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn951570(v=nav.90).aspx
    • Versions of Dynamics NAV earlier than 2016 that use Connector to interoperate with Dynamics CRM versions earlier than 2016 will continue to be supported by Connector  through the life cycle of the Dynamics NAV version.  If the Dynamics CRM instance must be upgraded, we recommend upgrading the version of Dynamics NAV to 2016 or a later version.
  • Microsoft Dynamics AX

    • Dynamics AX versions released after Dynamics AX 2012 R3 will include a new interoperability framework for connecting with Dynamics CRM 2016 and successor versions.  Stay tuned to the Dynamics AX release announcements for more information on that technology.
    • Versions of Dynamics AX earlier than 2012 R3 that use Connector to interoperate with Dynamics CRM versions earlier than 2016 will continue to be supported by Connector through the support life cycle of the Dynamics AX version. If the Dynamics CRM version is upgraded to a post 2016 version, then the Connector implementation will fall outside of the support matrix.  If the Dynamics CRM instance must be upgraded, we recommend upgrading the version of Dynamics AX to a version later than 2012 R3.
  • Microsoft Dynamics GP

    • Dynamics GP will continue to be supported according to the support lifecycle for the given version of Dynamics GP that interoperates with Dynamics CRM until the version of Dynamics CRM is upgraded to a version greater than 2016.
  • Microsoft Dynamics SL

    • Dynamics SL will continue to be supported according to the support lifecycle for the given version of Dynamics SL interoperates with Dynamics CRM until the version of Dynamics CRM is upgraded to a version greater than 2016.

What should we be recommending to current Connector clients after the support gets deprecated? Use a tool like Scribe or Kingsway Soft? Or will MS release another solution? Thank you!

It all depends on the ERP that they are using. Dynamics AX will be releasing something in the future for interoperation with Dynamics CRM. Dynamics NAV already has a replacement in-market. If they are using Dynamics GP or Dynamics SL, then I do not have a recommendation at this time. I would encourage customers and partners to work together to find the right solution.

Hi everybody, i have a question about the Connector for Microsoft Dynamics and CRM. I need to syncronize my Dynamics NAV 2009 and CRM 2016. It is possible to do? I'm searching about this information but i can't find the definitive answer.Thank you for your work and your support.

Only Dynamics NAV 2009 R2 was ever supported for interoperation with Dynamics CRM using Connector for Microsoft Dynamics. Dynamics NAV 2009 and Dynamics NAV 2009 R2 are both out of mainstream support now and as such so are deployments of Connector which have one of those versions of Dynamics NAV as the ERP portion of their interoperation. This is why you are struggling to find information on this type of deployment, because it is no longer supported.

May I conclude that this means that there will be no update for version 3.4.304.1 to support SQL 2016?

You are correct, there will be no update to Connector for Microsoft Dynamics to support Microsoft SQL Server 2016.

Hi, I am trying to implement the NAV side connector to CRM. looking at the CRM PRoducts Table in NAV. When I try and add a new field to the table that is avaialble in the corresponding Product Entity in CRM. I get the following error when trying to run the table on the NAV side. External Type='' is not supported. Page Edit - Product must close. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Hi John, you might want to contact NAV developer support for this one. Also, I would encourage you to look into using the new integration framework for CRM that is built into NAV if you can. Unfortunately, I do not have any more NAV-specific advice for you than this.

Is there any documentation on migrating from the old CRM\Nav Connector and implementing the new built in Nav\CRM Connector. We have 2 clients using the old connector who are upgrading to CRM2016 and Navision 2016 and wish to use the new built in connector. Is it simply a matter of configuring the new Connector in Navision, and switching off the old connector. Are the Navision integration tables and integration GUID\keys still the same? Thanks

Bill, there is no documentation on this and I have not personally done this. The new integration within NAV does use much of the old framework within NAV and I believe your statement about configuring the new integration and turning off the old Connector integration is fairly accurate. Obviously you are encouraged to test this out in a QA environment first before going live, and if you have any customizations to your Connector based integrations those may not transfer over as easily. I do think that the NAV support team has taken cases like this before and you may be able to work with them on an advisory case on this if needed.

Hi Peter, first let me state that I no longer work for Microsoft so I am not sure what the official word on this is, but I can give you some advice. I assume that you are asking if Connector for Microsoft Dynamics supports CRM in D365 since, as you point out, its version number is 8.2. The answer is I am not sure and it most likely has not been tested. I think when the end of support for Connector post was authored the belief was that any future versions of CRM would be version 9.x.x.x.x and it appears that is not the case yet. Also, Connector will not support D365 financials / operations integrations to CRM. And once CRM is versioned to anything other than 8.x.x.x Connector will no longer support that version either. I would encourage you to take a look at the road map for D365 to see when the next major version of CRM will be coming out. Unfortunately, any work that you do now will most likely be "throw away" in the near future so I think the issue of supporting the most recent version of CRM is a bit of a moot point at this time. I hope that gives you a bit of assistance.

Hi Peter, you can get the connector working with Dynamics 365 by replacing the xRM SDK dll. Download the 'Microsoft Dynamics 365 Software Development Kit (SDK)', unpack it, copy the file 'Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.dll' from the bin folder to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\Microsoft Dynamics Adapter\Adapters\Microsoft.Dynamics.Integration.Adapters.Crm2011'. Restart the connector service. Also it looks like the Connector works with NAV 2017 too, simply restore the missing objects and code. Of course this is unsupported, but it will give you some time to get the new integration working.

FYI. NAV 2017 CU1/2 now uses the Microsoft.Xrm.Tooling.Connector.dll instead of Microsoft.Xrm.Client.dll. To connect to a on-premise environment (tested it with Dynamics 365 CRM), fill in the following at CRM connection setup...URL Dynamics CRM: https://internal_crm_url/orgname;Domain=your_domain;AuthType=IFD Username = your_domain\your_username

Hi, have you got this to work with Dynamics 365 (online) of the CRM? The Connector is Crashing when I updated the dll's from the 365 SDK.

We are looking to perform integration between GP and CRM. Does anyone have any recommendations for an alternative, since the Microsoft Connector is going away? Is there any news on a replacement utility from Microsoft?

We have a client on NAV 2015, they are on CRM online and just upgraded to from CRMonline 2016 (8.1....) to Dynamics 365 Sales (8.2....) The connector has stopped working when this happened. In looking at the matrix it shows the connector is supported through 8.x.x.x. This is not case, it looks like the DLL in the 8.2.. version have changed. Does anyone know if Microsoft will be releasing an newer version of the connector (Currently 3.4.304.1) in order to support 8.2.x.x?

Sorry did not see the comment earlier about unpacking the SDK kit. Please disregard.Thank you Vincent for your reply. Hi Peter, you can get the connector working with Dynamics 365 by replacing the xRM SDK dll. Download the ‘Microsoft Dynamics 365 Software Development Kit (SDK)’, unpack it, copy the file ‘Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.dll’ from the bin folder to ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\Microsoft Dynamics Adapter\Adapters\Microsoft.Dynamics.Integration.Adapters.Crm2011’. Restart the connector service.

Using the Nav 2017 connector with Dynamics CRM in 365. Can't find documentation on how to setup O365 login for CRM connector so that is complies with good security practice.

We are trying to get the Connector up and running between Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 SP1 (On-premise) and getting an issue while trying to configure the Adapter Settings. Under the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 default Adapter Settings, after specifying the correct CRM Integration account details as well as the URL to the CRM Discovery Service, when we hit "Test Settings", we get the following error message: The following exception occurred while attempting to retrieve the "<>" configured company: Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://<>/<>/XRMServices/2011/Organization.svc?wsdl=wsdl0'. When clicking on the Configure Microsoft Dynamics CRM link, it does manage to retrieve the list of Organizations from CRM, but as soons as we select the one we want to integrate to and click on "Next", we get the same error. Please advise.

Hello,Anybody successful in configuring Connector 3.4.304.1 with Dynamics 365 V9.0? I tried updating the dll's and changing to 9.0.0.0 in the config files. But this did not work. Configuring the adapter fails.
