Groove 2007 vs MOSS 2007 vs WSS 3.0 vs Communicator 2007 (Part 5)

This posts follows on from Post 4 and is part of a 6 part series of posts.

It is best to use Groove 2007:

· In short-term projects when sharing information and creating documents quickly is important.

· In small teams performing project-centric work.

· When the end user wants to produce documents and share them with their project team rather than distribute them widely.

· When secure collaboration from people in geographically-dispersed teams or within different organisations is required with minimal configuration.

· When network traffic must be kept to a minimum.

· In a mobile workforce that requires offline document capabilities or where network connectivity is limited.

Note: It is possible to obtain offline documents when using MOSS 2007 or WSS 3.0 by synchronising either of these with Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Groove 2007.

It is best to use WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 when:

· Long-term, central file storage is required.

· Automation of business processes is required on the information created and shared.

· Information must be distributed widely.

· A collaboration area is needed but operating systems other than Microsoft Windows are used.

· Management of all information created is highest priority.

· Reducing content duplication is important.

· Business intelligence, such as graphical representations of numerical data, is required from the information created and shared.

· Custom user interfaces are desired to access documents and files.

· It is not possible to install client software onto users’ machines.

It is best to use Communicator 2007 when:

· Users need to share applications in real-time, for example if users want to simultaneously create the same Word 2007 document.

· Users want to conduct ad-hoc IM sessions but don’t have access to their computer.

· Users want to conduct IM sessions but operating systems other than Microsoft Windows are used.

My next post will conclude the series of posts on Groove 2007 vs MOSS 2007 vs WSS 3.0 vs Communicator 2007.
