Heroes Happen {Here} - Launch event Giveaways
I've been getting a lot of email recently about the Launch Events, specifically asking me what versions of which software people will be getting for attending. Although I'm sure the real reason you're going is to learn more about these exciting new products, here's the list of software bits I was handed last week:
- Windows Server 2008 Enterprise RTM Bits (64 + 32bit) + a product key (as if it was NFR FPP) "for internal testing & evaluation only" (That means you can use the software for development and testing, but you can't deploy it to production).
- Visual Studio 2008 Standard RTM Bits – this is NFR FPP.
- SQL Server 2008 CTP 5.0 with standard eval EULA plus a voucher for redeeming final bits when available
NFR means "Not for Resale"
FPP means "Full Product Package" - like something you'd buy in the store, that's a complete, full version of the software (not a trial).
This software is still so new, that there are no product packages available yet, so that's why VS and WS are listed as RTM bits. You're getting a CTP for SQL Server because it hasn't yet RTM'd, but once it does you'll be able to turn in your voucher to get the final bits when available.
Of course, all of this could change - this is the latest word I've been given and I wanted to make sure to share it with all of you.
UPDATE 2008-02-19: This list here applies only to the Premier (Dallas and Houston) and Standard (Tulsa, San Antonio and Baton Rouge) launch events. For those of you doing Community Launch Events, you'll get 5 copies of the "standard" version of each of these products to give away at your events.

What's the use of the server OS if it cannot be used for production use?Anonymous
February 08, 2008
@someone: Because then you get hooked on all the neato stuff about WS2008 while developing for it and then you have to buy copies of it to use in production. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, Microsoft has a server OS to sell. These events are ultimately about driving software and operating system sales - to the extent of giving away development software so that you can write more software to take advantage of them.Anonymous

Chris, I am still waiting for the key for the Visual Studio I got at your Installfest event. It has been over 8 weeks since I registered it on vs2008offer.com. Is it possible it was lost in the mail? PingAnonymous

If you go to the Server 2008, SQL 2008, and Visual Studio 2008 launch event in your area, it looks like you will be getting some Not-For-Resale goodies. 1. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise RTM (64 and 32 bit) with a product key 2. Visual Studio 2008 StAnonymous

Hey there, I just came from the event but I didn't get that voucher for the RTM version of SQL Server 2008. Where did you get the voucher? Or it is included in the bag package?Anonymous

I believe most of the software is trial software that will expire after time.Anonymous

Any updates on the "One Year Evaluation License" question? Are they really just evaluation copies or does the code provide for a permanent license? I remember with the Office 2007 launch there was an issue with the code, but everyone ended up getting a permanent license. Thanks!Anonymous

I went to the VS 2008 Install Fest where I got the trial version with the orange sticker on the back about vs2008offer.com. I've been waiting for my key but have not received it either. I just went to the Heroes Happen {Here} event here in Dallas, so I now have a copy of VS2008 STD, but I wonder if there's a way to check on the Install Fest license (that was the PRO version). If you went to the InstallFest event and got a DVD with a sticker on the back, and were able to log into the appropriate web site before the offer expired and enter your name & mailing address, you should have gotten your DVD by now. If you did not, please mail me your mailing address information and the sticker number off the back of the DVD and I'll check into it for you. CKAnonymous

I went to the Salt Lake event. They told us that even though the stuff said "one year evaluation license", it would not expire after one year. Something to do with legalities. I do have a question though. We got the Standard version of VS2008. We also got Windows Mobile 6 Developers Resource Kit. The Mobile DRK for VS2008 only works with the Pro version. Why would they give something away that we are not able to use (without shelling out the $$$ for the Pro version)?Anonymous

Just tried to register my SQL voucher from the launch event in Tulsa and Tulsa is not a selection on the drop down list for locations so it will not register. The voucher says to register at www.sqlserverheroes.com.Anonymous

Hey, any update regarding the "One Year Evaluation License" question I posted previously. While I appreciate the answer from Kevin W, I want someone who went to the NY launch event to verify that for me please. ThanksAnonymous
