Step-By-Step: Configuring Windows 8 for Reset and Refresh

Hello Folks,

Last weekend i finally got my new Surface Pro 3. woohoo!!  (I love this thing).

So i decided to pass on my previous machine to my daughter. i figure I'd just use the “Update and Recovery” options in “PC Settings” to Remove everything and reinstall Windows.

When i tried to Reset my machine, i got was a nice screen asking me to install the media.

I needed to rebuild the recovery images from scratch.  it's easy and here’s how you do it.

Update and Recovery

The Windows Update and Recovery screen give you 2 options to help fix issues.

1- Refresh your PC without affecting your files

2- Remove everything and reinstall Windows

They each depend on different sets of files to perform their tasks.

Creating a Refresh recovery image

It’s pretty straight forward to create an image to be used for Refreshing your PC without affecting your files

First, create directory called "recovery" on the root of C: . Second, copy the install.winfrom a windows 8 installation media to the directory we created earlier (it will be used later)

  1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, follow these steps:
    • On the Start page, type cmd, press and hold or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

recimg -CreateImage C:\recovery

Note The Recimgcommand registers the custom image that is used to refresh the Windows 8 PC

You will then be able to use the Refresh option without issues.

Creating a Reset image

To configure the Reset image we will use the Install.wim file we copied earlier as the source where the Remove everything and reinstall Windows will take the needed files to complete the process

  1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, follow these steps:
    • On the Start page, type cmd, press and hold or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
  2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

reagentc.exe /setosimage /path C:\recovery /target c:\Windows /Index 1

This will register the proper files needed to reset your PC and allow you to reset your PC without issues.

I hope this helps.

Thanks

Cheers!
