Windows Server “8” Beta announcements, availability (updated)
Hi all, Ned here. For those who spent the day in a coma, Windows Server “8” Beta and Windows 8 CP are out. Make sure you start by visiting Bill Laing’s announcement on the Windows Server Blog. This morning he formally announced the availability of Windows Server “8” Beta and outlined some of the design philosophies in a brief post.
Next, we have a new kind of document we call the “Understand and Troubleshoot” guides, which are designed to explain the inner workings of new features and how to troubleshoot them. You may recognize some of the authors (you know I hate link lists, but in this case I’ll make an exception).
- Understand and Troubleshoot AD DS Simplified Administration in Windows Server “8” Beta
- Understand and Troubleshoot Dynamic Access Control in Windows Server “8” Beta
- Understand and Troubleshoot Virtualized Domain Controller (VDC) in Windows Server “8” Beta
- Windows Server “8” Beta Understand and Troubleshoot Guides (Wiki Landing page)
There are also “Test Lab Guides” and TechNet docs that introduce and demonstrate features, as well as assist with deployment.
- Test Lab Guide: Demonstrate ADDS Simplified Administration in Windows Server "8" Beta
- Test Lab Guide: Demonstrate Virtualized Domain Controller (VDC) in Windows Server "8" Beta
- Windows Server “8” Beta Test Lab Guides (Wiki Landing Page)
- Active Directory Domain Services overview
- Dynamic Access Control: Scenario Overview
And a reminder - send all your IT Pro feedback to the links below. People are definitely listening.
I know some of you are looking forward to the typical in-depth and honest AskDS beta content you’ve read for the past five years - you’re IT professionals and chomping at the bit to start learning about all the new enterprise features. Well, we’re still muzzled here and not allowed to discuss anything. Hang in there; I’m hopeful it won’t be too much longer.

What is your favorite AD feature in Windows 8? Not sure if you can comment on that. DAC looks really cool...could be a game changer.Anonymous

It's too bad that they communication restriction is still in place, but hey... I for one am glad to see a bunch of AskDS names appearing on the documents above! Great work guys! Meanwhile we'll just wait patiently until you get the all clear to unleash some Win8 articles. At least we have the OS in the wild to play with until then.Anonymous

Will the noun "goo" appear in said documents? :)Anonymous

@Ryan, a cursory search of the word goo and nubbin resulted in zero hits. :( Reading the 400 page document would feel more like reading a blog post if they were in there. Just sayin'Anonymous

Great job! This guide's content and format is really useful. Just one feedback: am i missing something or there are some links pointing to MS internal resources? (i.e. page #3 - More Information block - URL for Dynamic Access Control, Kerberos Constrained Delegation Across Domains and Group Managed Service Accounts point to mail.microsoft.com/owa/redirect...Anonymous

Here's to hoping that ADAC is finally extensible...(really need rapid development not tied to OS releases for some stuff...)Anonymous

Account lockout is evil and I always recommend against it. Not that it matters in this case - that particular account cannot be locked out. :)
