Noticed a problem with Windows 7 build 7100 x64 and the RSAT for Windows 7 RC x64. I launch a custom mmc with several admin tools as an elevated user, using runas /user:domainadminuser@domain.com "mmc c:admadmintools.msc".  I open Active Directory Users and Computers, right-click the domain root and perform a find.  I can type text in the name or description boxes, but backspace doesn't work at all. This only seems to happen on my custom mmc, not when launching the admin tools via the normal shortcuts.  But those are useless for running as an elevated user.

I am so far unable to reproduce this behavior (I'm actually having other issues just getting your syntax to work in my later build at all), but I'm still digging. One question though, about this statement: "This only seems to happen on my custom mmc, not when launching the admin tools via the normal shortcuts.  But those are useless for running as an elevated user." Why are those useless? Any of them can be run elevated as a different user, via shift-right clicking.

I have this issue using Windows 7 and the released version of RSAT. Did this ever get resolved?

I just tried to recreate my custom consoles and the problem has gone away. Could have been caused by using custom consoles created using older snap-ins or MMC.

This happens with individual consoles as well under certain circumstances.  Still not aware of what is causing it, and still annoying!

Same problem with backspace in RSAT, and very little posted about it on the web. Win7 ult, x64 version.  This is the second workstation with a similar setup but the same problem. It is random.  I think it may be memory related.  I usually lock rather than logout of my workstation.

I have major issues with the backspace key not working in the Group Policy Management Console after installing RSAT on Windows 7 Enterprise x64. I started having this issue while running the Windows 7 RC, and it has continued after a format and reinstall to Enterprise x64. I am NOT using a custom MMC. I am using Group Policy Management found within Administrative Tools. Backspace just doesn't work. I have to highlight and delete.

Can you walk me through exactly where you are seeing this? I cannot reproduce the backspace issue. I'd be curious to hear if you could reproduce this after installing OS from the DVD and only RSAT. Not anything else. A few thousand (tens of? hundreds of?) RSAT users have not reported the issue after all...

I'm another one of those "thousands of customers" with this RSAT/backspace issue (and other keys, like the arrow keys). I have no clue why it happens, and it seems to happen randomly like the other ones here say. When it happens, I have to close the MMC and open it again. Then backspace works. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise Norwegian, custom MMC. If I get the time I'll try to reproduce this on a clean Win7.

I am able to reproduce this problem at will. It happens when Active Directory Users and Computers and Group Policy Management snap-ins are installed in the same console. To reproduce the problem:

  1. In Group Policy Management, select a GPO in the left pane, then click the "Settings" tab in the right pane.
  2. In ADUC, right-click the domain and select "Find" to bring up the search dialog. Type in some text, then attempt to backspace or delete. Once the keys stop working the only way to fix it is to relaunch the console. I'm running Windows 7 Professional (X64) ...fred

Hi, I am able to reproduce the GPMC issue with the Settings tab being active (the use of admin or standard did not matter in my repro). Also you will find that the "T" key will cause a refresh to happen, as if you were hitting "F5". With these details I was able to find that one of customers did finally call in on this and get it explored. We're looking into whether or not it rates a fix in this version, since the workaround is pretty easy (just move away from the Settings tab; click any other tab). If there are other scenarios where you can get the backpsace to not work, let me know with precise repro steps. PSR.EXE is your friend here - as you can see, a lot of assumptions get put down here that are not always relevant to the repro. Thanks

Hi, I have the problem of some keys not working in ADUC and GPMC consoles.   I have Win 7 Pro x64 in French RTM with RSAT RTM too. The problem occurs in default and custom MMC. When the problem occurs, I need to close the MMC and open it again and the problem's gone. I've not been able to find the way to reproduce it.  When it occur, Backspace, arrows, End, Home keys do not work.  In GPMC, it occurs frequently when I try to rename a GPO.  In ADUC, it occurs frequently when creating objects.  These two consoles are included in my custom MMC. It's easy to solve it be closing and re-opening the MMC, but pretty anoying. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find info about this bug anywhere else this blog post... Is there a fix on its way for this ? Thank you, Dominic

I'm afraid that until someone here opens a Premier case and files a DCR through their TAM, it will not be fixed. Letting us all know the extent of the issue is good, but it does not start the ball rolling.

Weird GPMC behaviour 110072383316937 I have the weird issue regularly as well, and one of the other admins here also notices it.  I'm in GPMC most often of any of us.  Backspace and arrow keys won't work, renaming a group policy won't work - all typing is inhibited, and pressing T will exit rename/edit mode entirely.  I CAN put the new name in notepad, copy it, go into rename mode on GPMC, and paste the new name.  This is on Win7x64, fully patched to current. Group Policy Management 6.0.0.1 Management Console 3.0 Version 5.1 (Build 7600) UAC is off.  Typical invocation pattern is: Explorer/localadmin only->runas CMD/domain admin->gpmc.msc
