Good news for TFS 2005, 2008 and in future 2010 users in terms of compatibility … ‘ZAYD’ take note
If you review Brian Harry’s blog post TFS 2010 Admin, Operations & Setup Improvements you will notice that there were plans to support Team Explorer (TE) 2005 and 2008 to work against Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2010. TE 2005 support then took a back seat and it looked as if TE/TFS 2005 environments would be forced to start an upgrade.
Thanks to immense push-back from the field … most likely “you” … it has been decided to deliver a patch for TE 2005 as well. This means that TE 2005, TE 2008 and TE 2010 (obviously) will be able to target TFS 2010, TE 2010 will be able to target TFS 2005, 2008 and 2010.
This is a cure to an adoption blocker for those environments that are still running with SQL Server 2005 and running a mix of TFS environments. It allows many of the environments to co-exist and for migration to new development environments to be planned around development teams, their schedules, their needs … rather than technology upgrades.
Brian, thank you for slotting in this magic puzzle piece! I know of at least 3 faces that are now in “smile” mode in South-Africa :)
