Douglas Adams (by yag)
Darien posted an article about Douglas Adams and his Hitchhiker’s Guide series today and it got me thinking about the time I was lucky enough to be invited over to his house in Santa Barbara for dinner. It was one of the most enjoyable dinners of my life – I was in Santa Barbara doing some consulting work at the University of California, and was supposed to go out with a friend (Savannah) and some of her friends. She called and told me that her friends had just gotten back from the UK, and couldn’t find a sitter for their daughter, and would I mind going over to their place instead. Next thing I know, Douglas Adams is answering the door, and he and I are playing with his iMac prototype (he was an Apple Fellow) and looking at some music videos he was working on.
Anyway, the dinner lasted from around 7pm till 3am, lots of wine and champagne was consumed, the salmon was awesome, and the conversation ranged from film to politics to computers to anthropology to the online Hitchhiker’s Guide. He and his wife were both amazing. Thanks Darien, for bringing it back for me.
