Utility Spotlight: PageDefrag
Your average Windows-based defragmenter can optimize most files on your hard drive, but some items are beyond their powers.
In the September issue of TechNet Magazine, Lance Whitney shows you how the PageDefrag utility defrags items untouched by other tools. PageDefrag, created by Mark Russinovich for Sysinternals, can defragment the Windows page file, Registry hives, event logs, and the hibernation file.
For more coverage of handy tools and utilities, keep an eye on the Utility Spotlight column in TechNet Magazine.
In addition, the Toolbox column in every issue of TechNet Magazine, edited by Greg Steen, introduces you to free or low cost third-party utilities and other resources that can help you accomplish a variety of system and network management tasks. Plus you'll find in-depth reviews of books on various IT and administration topics.
In the September installment of Toolbox, Greg highlights tools for moving SQL Server databases, securing network communications, monitoring USB activity, and managing virtual CDs and DVDs. Greg also takes a look at the book SharePoint Products and Technologies Administrator's Pocket Consultant, by Ben Curry.
Happy reading!

True - at the moment, PageDefrag is only supported on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP & Windows Server 2003. If an updated version should become available, we'll be sure to post it here.Anonymous

This is great news! Whenever I defrag, i often get a notice that "some files could not be defragmented". I'll give this a try and see if it helps. I'm a big fan of defragging; it really helps and takes much less time than the other stupid tasks like scanning for viruses and malware!
