The Desktop Files: Shared Computing with Windows SteadyState
You've seen the problem before: A shared computer that has been so used that it really isn't usable anymore. You see this in many places, from a family computer, to systems in a computer lab or conference room, to the PCs in a hotel or convention center's "computer room". These systems have been over customized, they've got configuration conflicts and rogue apps running in the background, and the result is that the system just doesn't run well. But there's a simple solution.
In the January installment of The Desktop Files, Wes Miller looks at this problem and demonstrates a recent solution from Microsoft. The Windows SteadyState tool, which is available as a free download, works on Windows XP and allows you to maintain control of systems that are being used by visitors, the public...or your kids.
Cheers,
