Two Projects

Here are two projects I would love to build if I ever found time to do it.

I want a news aggregator for PocketPC written to use the compact framework.  No doubt a product like this exists somewhere and if you're reading this, feel free to drop the URL in the comments section of this entry.  I still think it would be a fun project to build.  It would have a local cache so that I could sync in the cradle with internet pass-thru, then I could read my feeds offline.

Secondly, I want a web service that hosts my RSS feeds and stores a flag on each item to indicate if I have read it or not.  Aggregators would connect, get the feed list, and display unread items in bold.  I run SharpReader on my work and home machines and I hate having to re-read posts to see where I left off.

What do you use to read blogs?  How do you like it?

You read my mind...I'd also like a blog editor on pocket PC (with photo blog would be nice too!)

There is a pretty good PocketPC reader here:

As for a web service for RSS, I've not seen any implementations of this yet. My personal aggregator that I wrote used .NET Remoting to accomplish this but I quit using it when SharpReader was released. My RSS Library is available on gotdotnet if you are interested in giving it a shot.

I've been planning on doing something on the second front for awhile. We started a GDN workspace but never worked on it.

    See my post on why.

I've considered re-writing parts from the ground up, and trying to retro-fit readers like SharpReader for it. I'm still undecided which way to go.

We plan to use a subscription-like manager for these things. It would automatically fetch feeds, and overlay read/unread status and follow-up flags.

What would be cooler is if there was a standard API for an RSS Provider which did just this. Each reader could either manage their stuff individually or call some "getSubscriptions"... :)

BUt we'll see. I'll let you know if anything actually comes of it. I just haven't had time lately to work on it.
