How to display network templates in the Word 2007 New Document pane

Many of you who distribute or maintain documents and templates on a network have asked how to do this. Here's how to display templates that are stored on a network drive in the Word 2007 New document pane, under "My templates":

1.  Open Word, click the Word button, and then click Word Options.
2.  Click Advanced, scroll to the General section, and then click File Locations.
3.  Click Workgroup Templates and then click Modify.
4.  Browse to the network share where you store templates, and then click OK.

The next time you click My templates in the new document window, the templates on the network drive will appear. However, they will be displayed with any templates from the user's local template location, or "user templates" location.

(On Windows Vista, this is typcially C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. On Windows XP, it is typically C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Microsoft\Templates.)

Tips:

  • Make sure that everyone who needs to use the templates has access to the network drive, and that it's a secure and trusted location.
  • Make sure that the folder and/or the template files on the drive are set to read-only in the properties so they can't be easily or accidentally modified.

Looking for the answer to this question is exactly what led me to this website and this blog!  Can't figure out why it wasn't easily found under Microsoft Office Word Help, but it wasn't, so a big THANKS for having it here.

Hi, we're moving up from Word 2003 to 2007, and have added templates in 5 sub-folders on a network location - these appear just fine when selecting "New" / "My templates". Is there a one-click way to access this dialog from the Ribbon? If I make a VBA macro, I get the New dialog, with all templates (i.e. not just my 5 sub-folders, but all the default tabs (like "General", "Faxes", "Letters" etc.). Here's my code: Sub DisplayFileNewDialog()    Dim dlg As Dialog    Set dlg = Application.Dialogs.Item(wdDialogFileNew)    dlg.Show End Sub Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks!
