Installing SQL Server Express on Windows 7 Release Candidate

When installing SQL Server 2005 RTM/SP1/SP2 and SQL Server 2008 RTM on Windows 7 RC it presents you with a warning message. The message says that this SQL Server version has a known compatibility issues with Windows 7 RC. This warning is genuine and applies to all SQL Server editions, including all Express editions. The incompatibility was fixed in SQL Server 2008 Service Pack1 and SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3.

You can safely continue the installation by clicking "Run program" button and apply the latest service pack afterwards. In some cases you may be presented with this warning message multiple times during the installation process.

Once the installation is complete please apply the latest SQL Server service pack. You can use Windows Update to do so. Just be sure to click "Get updates for more Microsoft products" to start obtaining updates for SQL Server. SQL Server service packs should show up on the list of optional updates. You may need to kick-off the scan for updates manually if not - you can do it by clicking "Check for updates" link on the left pane of main Windows Update window.

If for some reason Windows Update doesn't work for you, please download and install latest service pack manually.

Download SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 Download SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1

If you're installing SQL Server 2005 Express (any Express edition) or SQL Server 2008 Express (Runtime Only) you can just download the SQL Server Express package containing the latest service pack. This may seem counter-intuitive if you already have some Express package, but installing it and then downloading and applying service pack is going to take longer than downloading a package already containing the latest service pack and installing it. Plus, in case of SQL Server 2008 Express the service pack package is actually bigger than the SQL Server Express package, since the service pack is shared with all SQL Server 2008 editions.

If you need to install SQL Server 2008 Express edition other than Runtime Only on Windows 7 RC and need to avoid the warning dialogs, you can create SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 1 package yourself. Please follow steps described by Peter Saddow here.

    i installed 'SQL Server 2008 Express SP1' on win2k8r2 rc but Management Studio Express did not install.  all of the MS links to 'SQL Server 2008 Express with tools' or 'Management Studio Express standalone' are non-sp1. how do i install tools for my 2k8 express sp1 and/or when is MS going to release the 'SQL Server 2008 Express with tools sp1' package?

    We are not planning to release the Tools or Advanced Services package with SP1 pre-integrated. You can read the reason for this at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlexpress/thread/6b31a657-fe8a-4d72-a82f-b795f8b1daa3. If you've already installed the SQL Express 2008 Express core package, you can install Management Studio from the links on http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/download. Once that is installed you should scan your computer using Microsoft Update and it will detect the need to apply SP1 for Management Studio and allow you to select and install it from there.     After I installed SQL Server 2005, may I install SP3 directly? Or should I installed SP1 and SP2 first?

    I have tried installing SQL Express 2005 from the command prompt.  I wanted to use the option ADDUSERASADMIN = 1 to add the logged in Windows user as an admin, but it didn't seem to work.  Is this option used in Windows 7?

    To: Virenda gautam. I´ve installed sucessfully SQL Server 2005 on windows 7 home premium in a Laptop ( Toshiba satellite L505). Just leave instructions: Download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3 from the link above ( or you need) and install. Enjoy

    i install sql server 2005 on my window 7 operating system... but when i create database then system throw to error failed to retrive data for this request. (microsoft.sqlserver.express.smoenum)

    i am installing sql server 2008 without the service p ....but on the setup support rules..the system reports that  it was unable to resatrt my system hence i am unable to go further...what can i do?

    hai friends this is a very good post im using windows 7 premium and i have installed the following setup which is one among the above listed. Download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3. This works perfectly fine in my laptop. Very Very thanks for keeping this post.

    I am trying to install sql server 2014 express edition into my pc, my pc configuration is i3-processor, 4GB RAM and 500GB harddisk space.  But when i installing server it will throwing an called please check your system capability.  Please tell me the system configuration for installing SQL Server 2014 Express Edition into my pc.

    As always with Microsoft, the stuff you are talking about in this page simply doesn't work.  On top of that, your documentation is always way beyond awful.  This really does apply with EVERYTHING!! that you do.
