where's the rumours?

We're less than a week away from the big Stevenote. I trawled through the rumour sites today, and noticed that they're really light on content. I think that we can take it as a given that we'll see a preview of Leopard and a MacTel replacement for the PowerMacs. But there's not much other than that: maybe a new iPod Nano, maybe the long-hoped-for iPhone [1], maybe some updates to existing hardware. But most of this other stuff feels more like hopeful optimism than anything else.

So I feel like the rumour sites are letting me down. Around a big Mac event, I love seeing what the rumour sites come up with, and then comparing them to reality. But now ... nothin'. Where's the way-out-there rumours? Where's anything that my mom, who couldn't tell a MacBook from a ThinkPad, couldn't come up with? Yes, that's right, my mom has figured out that the next version of OS X will be shown at WWDC. Well, she actually said, 'isn't that computer thing you use going to have a big convention where they'll show a new thingie soon?', which I figure is close enough. It's certainly not much different than what the rumour sites are saying.

Le sigh. I feel like I should be coming up with my own rumours, if only to keep myself amused. Feel free to comment with your favourite rumour-that-should-be if you like.

[1] The hope for an iPhone is keeping me from getting a CrackBerry to replace my long-suffering Palm T3 and Motorola V551. I'm not convinced that it's coming, but I'd feel really dumb buying the CrackBerry tomorrow only to find out that the iPhone is available on Monday. My rule of thumb is not to buy anything technology-related a month before MWSF/WWDC to avoid this.

    OK, here are some rumors:

    1) Apple is buying back VPC from the MacBU and will include this as virtualization solution in 10.5

    2) Apple will present how well the transition to Intel is doing and will let MS and Adobe give a preview of Office:12 for Mac and Photoshop

    3) Because Steve likes to make ME happy, the Macbook Pro will be updated and get the same magnetic closure as the Macbool not pro...

    4) Steve will present it's personal best of "I am a PC" commercial parodies to have every one LOL

    ;-)

    Why not ask Scoble?
"Speaking of Apple, they are readying a dizzying amount of new products. I wish I could camp out at an Apple store during the World Wide Developer Conference on August 7th. I wish I could say more, but that’d get me sued by Steve Jobs and I don’t need that kind of heck right now."

Honestly, what's more important for geeks like us than the "Mac Pro" boxes? That's the thing I'm most looking forward to, because as it stands now, they could be the most ridiculous PC's out in terms of performance. I love my MacBook Pro, but my Windows desktop is getting old. Time for a replacement.

Will the Mac BU be previewing any new software at WWDC 2006 such as Office 12 or Messenger 6?
