Messenger:Mac 6 is out!
On Wednesday, at 10am PST, Messenger 6 went live. We've added some highly-requested features, including:
- MacBU's very first Universal Binary!
- iTunes support for the 'I'm now listening to ... ' thing
- custom smileys
- Spotlight support (yay! this one I definitely care about)
- spellcheck (oh thank goodness)
Astute readers will notice that this list does not include a feature for which we receive a lot of requests: webcams. Mary Starman, our Group Product Manager, posted an article at Mac Mojo about it: Messenger: haves and hA/Ve nots.
I'm in the usability lab this week, so I hope that's enough excuse for being late to this particular party. 24 hours late isn't too bad, right?

Hi Nadyne,
Love the whole MacBU blog thing.
I tried to use Messenger last night to chat with a friend (first time I was going to try it out since downloading the v6 update) and it crashed on me after typing three lines which it told me were not sent. :(
Oh, another thing - i don't know where to send the product feedback - but virtualpc (which i know you guys no longer do) has lost all sound since updating to 10.4.8? Would this even be worth submitting as a bug now that you don't support it?
Thanks again for all the posts of your team. Great to read some of the inside stuff. - Anonymous

Hi Kristan -- I haven't had any problems with crashing, and I've been using v6 for a few weeks. (We get it earlier than the general public does. :)
Although we're not going to bring VPC to the new MacTels, we are still supporting the existing version of VPC v7 according to our support guidelines. We'll announce when support for it will stop. I've emailed the VPC team to ask if they know about anything about this issue. In the interim, it would be helpful to know which version of VPC you're using, the OS that you're using with it, and the hardware that you're running it on. - Anonymous

Hi Nadyne,
I will keep trying with messenger and see how it goes, but that was a little sad when it happened because I was all excited to use it.
re VPC, I have an iMac G5 20" (the ones just before the iSights were fitted to them), i'm trying to run win xp pro with it, and the version of vpc is v7.0.2 (build 050607)
It actually pops up first thing with a warning saying: "Virtual PC is unable to play sounds. Virtual PC was not able to start the Macintosh audio system. A newer version of Mac OS may fix this problem."
Thanks for following this up. Oh, and by the way, Word really does seem to have been speeded up by the latest Mac update (10.4.8). - Anonymous

Nadyne,
I've done some more poking around and found this article:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060930022115248
Turns out that the 10.4.8 update stuffed sound up (because I couldn't get Call of Duty working properly either). Running GarageBand fixed it and now both VPC and Call of Duty have sound again.
Sorry to point the finger, but I didn't know where else to look.
Regardless, at least this can be filed away so that others may find it helpful as well.
