iPhone ad deconstruction (first thoughts)
What do Mac geeks do for fun on a Sunday night? Why, they deconstruct the newly-released iPhone ads, of course!
So far, my boyfriend and I have noticed:
- icons on the bottom of the screen look different than what Steve demoed back at MWSF
- the ringtone in the ad isn't the iPhone ringtone that we heard back at MWSF (and you could download knock-offs of it within about 8 milliseconds after we heard it there)
- the AT&T branding is on the phone now, instead of the Cingular branding we saw at MWSF
- the on-screen keyboard looks and behaves totally differently (nice fade and transparency on the pop-over buttons)
- is the map doing a better job of figuring out your location? those aren't the results you get for doing a search on 'seafood' just for San Francisco, those are North Beach results
- the order of the buttons is different
- lots of UI polish in these ads, wow!!
- the ad was recorded on May 14th, at least based on the front page used from the New York Times
- ... which means that iCal icon on the phone isn't picking up today's date, unlike iCal in your Dock
- ... and the Clock icon doesn't show the current time, either -- and why would I want the clock when I can see the time at the top of the screen anyway?
- not sure what the fourth icon is when browsing a website, but it looks just a little bit different than that shown during the MWSF keynote
- they're using words for types of phone ('mobile', 'work', etc) when looking at an address book entry, instead of the icons that I see on most other mobile phones
- Apple needs to update the demos on the iPhone website, since they don't match the new ads -- they still show Cingular in the menu bar (for lack of a better term) and other UI things are different
- can't see the speaker area on the iPhone any more
- the webpage address bar is now sticking to the top of the screen, instead of scrolling with the web page
Dear Steve: I'd totally accept a new iPhone in my WWDC registration materials. Just so you know.

The ads actually show the date on the phone as June 3, and the little Calendar button says 3, so maybe it is picking it up...Anonymous

Actually, having looked closer (about 40% through ad3, yeah, I went and looked :P) it says "Sunday 3", which reflects the fact that the ads show the phone saying it's the June 3.Anonymous

Yeah, that's true. I had completely forgotten about the "Sunday, June 3" shown at the beginning of the ad. I wonder when they really filmed it, given that the NYTimes webpage that they're showing is from May 14. Of course, they didn't necessarily film it all in one go.
