I have a degree... now where's my job?

It appears to me that many students do not like to get involved with extracurricular activities unless a professor or another authoritative figure tells they they should. In this recent article from the ACM Tech News a college degree doesn't guarantee you a job. While this isn't new news it still appears that many students seem to have this type of outlook unfortunately.

My best advice is to get involved! While getting involved won't guarantee you a job either, it may help open doors that could turn into job opportunities. Become someone on your campus, make a name for yourself, and be sure you leave college knowing that it has nothing more to give to you and you have nothing more to give to it. As Scoble would say, pick something that you like and become an authoritative figure on it. This will help you distinguish yourself from everyone else.

The time now is your's.

Finally someone acknowledging that just because you have a degree doesnt "entitle" you to a job.

I learned early that the key is being knowledgable, and not just educated. Knowledgable to me implies being able to apply the education along with common sense to solve the business problems at hand.

    Right on.

I've had six full time jobs so far, of those only two were a result of some sort of job searching. The other four were because I knew people who know people who were hiring.

Being active and social is the most powerful job engine on the planet.

Agreed. Takes more than a degree now. I honestly think the best skill to get a job is communication skills because from there, you can develop a strong network. From there though, it's your ability to adapt and produce that will sustain your longevity.

You must be a well rounded person to make a smooth transition from the school world to the business world. Being a very tech-savvy developer without communication skills is like having knowledge without sharing.
