SQL Server Workgroup Edition

If you have not heard already Microsoft has announced a new version of SQL Server 2000 and 2005.  The new version, SQL Server Workgroup Edition fills a hole that lots of Visual Basic developers and consultants have run into.

With Visual Basic you can build data-driven application against MSDE for small to mid-size companies on a fixed budget, however there was a bit of sticker shock when you wanted to scale up to SQL Server Standard and purchase licenses.

SQL Server Workgroup provides a step in between at a much more affordable price to many smaller clients you might have.  It also works great if you are building application for a department or work group inside of a larger company but don't need the power of SQL Standard but hate the performance restrictions of MSDE.

Read about it here.

    Hi Brad,

How wonderful the Workgroup Edition is!

In the press release, you said that Workgroup Edition support up to 2Gbytes memory. It seems that the information is both for SQL Server 2000 and 2005 Workgroup Edition.

The document you suggested in your comment, Mr.Tom Rizzo said "SQL Server 2000 Workgroup Edition supports up to 2 CPUs, 2 gigabytes of memory". But in his presentation, he said SQL Server "2005" Workgroup Edition support up to 3Gbytes memory.

How much memory does the SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition support?

SQL Server 2005 Workgroup supports up to 3GB of RAM. For a side by side listing see http://www.microsoft.com/sql/spotlight/expandsqlserver.asp. There is a graphic about half way down the page that puts them side by side.
