This post will focus on migration resources for assisting with migrating to a new on-premises Exchange Server deployment, and a future post will focus on migrating to Exchange Online. An important thing to note is that Exchange 2003 has reached end of support almost a year ago, so you won't be able to get assistance from Microsoft's support teams if you encounter migration issues.

To help you plan, this article discusses the recommended steps to either upgrade to Exchange 2013 or move to Office 365. It also includes links to the appropriate documentation that provides detailed information about each stage in the process.

Upgrade from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

When you're upgrading your existing Exchange 2007 organization to Exchange 2013, there's a period of time when Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2013 servers will coexist within your organization. You can maintain this mode for an indefinite period of time, or you can immediately complete the upgrade to Exchange 2013 by moving all resources from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013, and then decommissioning the Exchange 2007 servers.

Exchange 2003 Migration Toolkit

The process to move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013 on-premises is a two-step migration.  There is no native, direct migration path from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange 2013 on premises; it must be done in stages.  For an Exchange Online migration, you can use the Migration dashboard in the Exchange Admin Center (EAC) to migrate mailboxes and mail content from an on-premises messaging system (including Exchange 2003) to Exchange Online and your Office 365 organization. You can migrate mailboxes and mailbox data from Exchange 2013, Exchange 2010, Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2003, or migrate mailbox data from an IMAP messaging system.
