MyTechEd.Day1.Title="The Gang's all here"

Coming to these shows is especially satisfying because it is like a family reunion. My old posse is here, and we pick up where we left off since the last show (except we all look a little older each time). Greetings to my friends Chris Kunicki, Charles Maxson, Jan Fransen, Sue Mosher, Ken Getz, and so very many others. It was great to see Jim Minatel from Wrox Press (Yes! Wrox does live on. Wiley & Sons press bought the Wrox titles that matter, and they are expanding the line- Check out the Professional InfoPath book).

I have been working the booth, and I love meeting the people who approach looking for answers, or to share. Here is a quick recap of some things shared by attendees who approached me at the Office 2003 booth:

  • One fellow works for a company that creates Add-ins for Office. These Add-ins connect to SAS and pull data for analytics. They wrote it in managed code with some core components going in the GAC and others being local assemblies. They are considering adding Access to the mix, and he wanted to know if Access was going to be around for a while. I let him know that I think Access has plenty of life left in it!
  • Another fellow works for a law firm in New York, and they are using Visual Studio Tools for Office to create a type of smart document solution where textual snippets get automatically placed in the document based on activity in the document.
  • Another fellow is writing a solution that uses Outlook contact information to create maps in MapPoint. Yeah! This one really captured my interest. I stepped him through the basic architecture, how to get going in Outlook development, and how to hook into the MapPoint API (I should blog more about that, actually).
  • Another three guys came up the booth, and one is a PowerPoint developer who embeds Flash animations in PowerPoint. His buddies were teasing him a little about developing in PowerPoint until I told them of some of the cool solutions I have built or seen built for PowerPoint. I asked the one developer to send me his ideas for content so we could make him famous :).

The breakfast was good. I had some eggs, grapes, and apple juice. My hotel at the Hyatt is good, but my bathtub's stopper does not fit properly, so my tub was emptying at a slightly slower rate than it was filling. It's not a big worry, however. It kept me from wasting time relaxing in the tub. I should not be idle.

I will upload some pictures today, so check out the Office Developer Center and this blog for updates.

 Rock thought for the day: Total Guitar and Guitar World magazines are great. I am trying to decide which one is better. I think TG has better tabs with the CD and all, but GW has better interviews and such. If you are into guitar, these are great magazines. There's not enough rock and roll at TechEd.

Rock on.
