I'm back from Tonga, and I'm bloggin' about Web Parts

OK gang,

I struggled with leaving paradise. Tonga is the most beautiful place on
earth. The people are the most friendly and interesting, and the food is
fantastic. I'll sneak in a photo when I can. Thanks for being patient while I
was away. We needed the break from the normal routine here in Redmond, and
my kids had a blast climbing coconut trees.

One of my latest articles is now live although I will not have it
headlined on the site just yet. You can get a sneak peek here:

The
Definitive "Hello World" Web Part Tutorial

I wanted to write an article that would help someone, soup-to-nuts, get a
very simple Web Part created and deployed. I will dive into more challenging
aspects later. I have other similar Hello World articles in the same Office Talk
space, so you may find them interesting as well.

Here's a shot from the Tonga vacation with one of my boys swinging from a
coconut tree:

 Rock
thought for the day: So, I am riding this little "bus" in Tonga, and I hear John
Denver's 'Country Roads' over the radio as a house-mixed dance number. This is
how things can go in the southern hemisphere!

Rock on.

John! Very well-written article! I have to say that it's better than the one that's currently used for the Intro into Web Parts. Well done.

I have a question regarding your use of data for your part. Might it be possible to provide the list of links that you create to an actual List on the page? So if you can imagine a Links List already on the page, is it possible to make your demo web part simply send the data to the list (essentially, your web part serves as the DataSource of the Links List)?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide and keep up the good work!

Sorry we missed you, but probably better for you since that way you didn't have to talk shop in your vacation spot.

But next time your in town (like it is a short walk to get to TONGA) drop by the shop and we'll grab a coconut or a up of coffee which ever is the fancy.

We're the little cybercafe that lets techno nerds with their laptops (during vacation) stay connected. The rest of the world just turns up and uses one of the screens (ha ha ha)
