Apple on x86 - ripple effects?
I recently read a top story on AnandTech about comparing Mac OS X versus Linux. It looks like most of the time they were getting reasonably comparable performance, (although Opteron configurations were apparently standing out as the best in several cases). Anyway, I am always skeptical seeing this type of apples vs. oranges comparisons since you had at least two dimensions in the picture: (1) the differences in hardware configuration between g5 and Intel/AMD and (2) you had a different OS. Anyway, I guess that moving to Intel will level out the playing field for Apple vs. other competitors. No more apples & oranges comparisons, so there might be a few surprises... Or maybe not.
By the way, while benchmarks are useful, any published results should be interpreted always with a grain of salt. And, anyway, it is best to verify them individually for the scenarios that interest you.
